#9 Field Hockey Takes Second Straight OT Win, 1-0 Over Franklin Pierce

Rindge, N.H. -- After 70 minutes of scoreless field hockey, it took freshman Elissa Frein just 2:25 into the overtime period to score her 10th goal of the season to lift the Adelphi University field hockey team over Franklin Pierce, 1-0.

The ninth-ranked Panthers (10-4, 6-2 NE-10), who defeated Lindenwood 4-3 in extra time on Friday before heading north, and Ravens (3-10, 0-8 NE-10) were even in total shots in the contest with 12 apiece. The home team held an 8-6 edge in penalty corners, while Amanda Gargiulo and her counterpart Meaghan Williams in net each made six saves.

In a first half dictated by defense, the two sides took five shots combined, while the home Ravens sought to benefit from five penalty corners. Nonetheless, nothing came of this opportunity, with Gargiulo making back-to-back saves against Lauren Grimard at the 12-plus minute mark. Down the other end, Williams made her first save of the half against Danielle Powers with just 1:38 until halftime.

The second half proved to be more offensive, with the two teams taking a total of 16 shots and the Ravens holding a 9-7 edge. Franklin Pierce came out firing, taking six of those shots in the first nine minutes of the half, forcing Gargiulo to make four stops. Adelphi was unable to break through either, as Williams made three more saves late in the half, and the two teams went to overtime.

It didn't take long for Frein to send Adelphi home with the victory, as she and Elizabeth Mercuri took all three shots for Adelphi in the 2:25 of extra time. Mercuri shot first, 2:18 in, only to be stopped by Williams, before Frein shot her own rebound past Williams and into the net for the win.

The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 19 when they travel to Bentley University for a 5 pm NE-10 contest.

NOTES
- Adelphi is now 3-0 in overtime games this season.
- Frein's 10 goals on the season ranks her third in the NE-10 and first among freshmen.
