Volleyball Dispatches St. Rose in Straight Sets

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to the College of Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference contest on October 1 and graduate student, Melissa Rigo and senior Amanda Borges came up big seemingly every time that the Panthers needed a point in a 3-0 (25-20, 36-34, 25-19) sweep. With the win, Adelphi improves to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while the Golden Knights slip to 5-7 on the season and 1-2 in the NE-10.

Borges and Rigo led the offense with 14 and 13 kills while Mandy Stanislovaitis chipped in eight. Megan Manierski had a game-high 35 set assists and three different members of the Brown and Gold had double digit digs, led by Sierra Crook's 23; Stanislovaitis had 15 digs and Rigo was credited with 13. The Panthers also played well defensively at the net, paced by the efforts of Madison Canestrari, who had four solo blocks, while Adelphi had a total of nine team blocks.

The first set was tight in the early going and remained tied just past the halfway point at 16 all. However, the Panthers got a little breathing room with a 4-0 spurt that was capped by a Rigo kill, giving Adelphi a 20-16 lead. The Golden Knights responded with four of the next five points, pulling to within one, 21-20, but another Rigo effort stopped the run and sparked a set-ending 4-0 burst from the home team, giving Adelphi a 25-20 win.

The second set of the contest required extra points, and lots of them, to produce a winner. Adelphi jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and continued to lead, 8-4 when St. Rose responded with an 8-2 run, taking the lead, 12-10 on a kill from Jennifer Gundrum. The set continued in back and forth fashion until four quick points from the Brown and Gold put Adelphi just one point from a 2-0 match lead, 24-21. However, the Golden Knights answered Adelphi with two kills and two service aces, taking the lead back, 25-24. The final tie of the set came at 34, when an Adelphi error tied the game at 34 and gave St. Rose the serve. But, Adelphi answered the bell, getting a kill from Stanislovaitis, 35-34 and then taking advantage of a Golden Knight miscue to grab a 36-34 victory.

Adelphi jumped out to another 8-4 lead in the third set, but St. Rose remained close, getting to within one point, 13-12 on a Brown and Gold error. However, a five point Panther spurt made it an 18-12 advantage, capped by a kill from Amalia Saleh. From there, the Golden Knights would get no closer than three points as Adelphi just eased away to a 25-19 third set win.
