Free Throws Key 77-73 Win For Men's Basketball At Goldey-Beacom

Wilmington, Del. - Late free throws down the stretch helped the Adelphi University men's basketball team remain unbeaten in non-conference games this season at 7-0 as well as moving to 12-2 with a 77-73 victory at Goldey-Beacom earlier this evening.

The Brown and Gold shot 85.7 percent (18-for-21) from the charity stripe that included Anthony Libroia and Jack Laffey going a combined 14-for-14. Michael Coffey shot 6-for-11 from beyond the arc to lead all scorers with 21 points along with a career-high 10 rebounds while Laffey joined Tavon Ginyard to score 33 bench points.

Four players reached double-figures for Goldey-Beacom that included three players sharing the team-high of 15 points. Elijah Tillman was one of the trio to go along with nine rebounds while Jarrel Lane posted eight assists.

After facing an early 9-3 deficit, the Panthers rallied for a 19-5 run being capped off by a free throw by Coffey. The first half included seven lead changes and three ties as the Panthers managed to to go into the locker room with a 41-39 lead despite a layup from Tillman with 19 seconds left to cut into the lead.

Coffey and Ginyard combined for eight 3-pointers and 29 points in the first 20 minutes while Coffey also posted six rebounds. Sameen Swift totaled nine points to lead the host with Tillman and Corey Taite each chipping in eight points. Lane connected for six of his assists in the period.

The back-and-forth contest continued into the second half with five more ties and six lead changes with Laffey leading the Adelphi effort behind 12 points in the half that included six free throws. Two of those free throws with 3:40 left in regulation from the freshman gave the Panthers a 68-67 lead as well as the lead for good. Anthony Libroia scored four of his 10 second half points from the charity stripe in the final 15 seconds to help hold off Goldey-Beacom.

The Panthers quickly return to Northeast-10 Conference action this Wednesday with a tripe to Rindge, New Hampshire to face cross-division rival Franklin Pierce at 7:30 pm.
