Women's Basketball Edges Assumption in Double OT Thriller, 78-76

Garden City, N.Y. -- With two seconds on the clock in the second overtime period, Julia Gnieser found an open Sierra Clark underneath the basket and the junior converted on the game-winning three point play to give the Adelphi University women's basketball team a huge Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Assumption College Greyhounds, 78-76, inside the Center for Recreation and Sport.

The Panthers (14-8, 7-7 NE-10), who led by 12 points at halftime only to see the Greyhounds (12-7, 8-6 NE-10) stage a furious second-half rally, snapped their three-game skid and remain in contention in an open Southwest Division in the Northeast-10 Conference.

Clark posted a game-high 19 points for Adelphi including the game-winner and also pulled down eight rebounds, while Calli Balfour provided a spark off the bench and net a double-double with 17 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Samantha Brenner totaled seven points and seven rebounds before fouling out in the second half, and Natalie Fekula stepped in with seven points in 23 minutes of action. Jo Impellizeri led the way for Assumption with 16 points, while Allison Stoddard and Kelly Carey both chipped in 15.

Shooting nearly 60% in the opening half, the Brown and Gold rallied from an early 6-0 hole, taking the lead for the first time at 14-12 with 1:21 remaining in the period when Lauren Nuss knocked down a triple off a pass from Emily Brandt. Adelphi's offense got going in the second quarter, as the Panthers outscored the visiting Greyhounds by a 26-15 margin. Stoddard hit her only three-pointer of the contest with 2:25 remaining to pull Assumption to within five, but Balfour and Tara Flynn combined to score 10 of the quarter's final 13 points to head to the break, with Flynn's three with just two ticks on the clock giving Adelphi the double-figure lead.

Assumption opened the second half on a 13-5 run, which led to a 20-11 third period that cut Adelphi's lead to just three, 53-50. Without taking the lead, Assumption pulled to within one with 23 second remaining, but Ashley Gomez knocked down a jumper with three seconds to go for Adelphi's final points of the third period. The Greyhounds tied the game for the first time at 55-55 just 1:22 into the final period, as the visitors scored six of the first eight points, and took a 62-60 lead on one of Carey's five triples with 4:19 remaining.

Adelphi still trailed by two at the 1:21 mark, but 20 seconds later, Clark net the equalizer to tie the game up at 64-64. After Adelphi turned the ball over with five seconds remaining, Assumption advanced the ball but the game headed to to the first overtime as Stoddard's last second three-point attempt rimmed out.

The two teams scored a combined 10 points in the first overtime period, with Assumption nudging ahead by two at 68-66 after Impellizeri hit one of two at the line and Carey hit another three-pointer at the 2:40 mark. Over the next minute, Gomez and Fekula combined to go 3-4 at the line to push the Brown and Gold back in front, but Ann Marie Idusuyi sank her second of two attempts with nine seconds remaining to send the game to another overtime.

Impellizeri net six of Assumption's seven points in the second OT, which helped turn around a 75-73 Panther advantage that Nuss created with another three-pointer with 2:03 remining. After Balfour picked up her fifth foul on Impellizeri, she knocked down both freebies to put Adelphi up against it with 27 seconds to play. Out of a timeout with just eight seconds remaining, Gnieser replaced Fekula and created the opportunity for Clark, who duly converted on what became the game-winner and one -- as Stoddard's last-ditch three-point effort for the win fell short.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 3 when they travel to Pace University for a 5:30 pm NE-10 contest.
