Women's Basketball Outruns Setters, 59-48

New York, N.Y. -- A big third quarter gave the Adelphi University women's basketball team a lead hardly relinquished, as the Panthers took down the Pace University Setters, 59-48, at Pace's Manhattan campus on Wednesday night.

Tara Flynn tied a career-high with a game-high 18 points on 7-13 shooting, with four three-pointers to pace Adelphi (15-8, 8-7 NE-10). Calli Balfour had a big night, as she tallied her second straight double-double off the bench (12 points, 11 rebounds) while adding five assists, three blocks and three steals. Samantha Brenner was the third Panther in double figures with 10 points, while Sierra Clark added a balanced seven points and eight rebounds. Jaclyn Oskam recorded a double-double for Pace (10-13, 5-10 NE-10) in the setback, with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

A low-scoring first half saw the two teams tied at 21-21 entering halftime, as both squads combined for 27 points in the second period. After trailing for much of the first two quarters, Adelphi took its second lead of the game at 17-16 behind a Lauren Nuss three-pointer, before Flynn and Balfour combined to put the Panthers up by three, 21-18 with 29 seconds to go. However, Oskam ensured that the two teams would tie as she knocked down her third three-pointer of the half with just 12 seconds left on the clock.

Adelphi's offense got going in the third period, as the Panthers outscored the Setters by a 21-15 margin -- matching their output from the first two periods. The Brown and Gold sprinted to a seven point lead just over a minute into the third, before Pace rallied to score the next eight to reclaim the lead. The two teams traded points for much of the period, before another three-pointer from Flynn put Adelphi back on top, 35-32, and the lead expanded to six as the game headed to the fourth thanks to two from Ashley Gomez.

Mary Beth Parslow came off the bench for two to open the final period, giving Adelphi its biggest lead to that point, 44-36, but the Setters chipped away at the deficit and made it a one-posession game at 51-48 when Gabriella Rubin sank a pair from the line with 4:13 remaining. Undaunted, Adelphi scored the final eight points -- with six coming from Brenner -- of the contest and kept the Setters off the board to come away with the win.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, February 6th when they travel to Southern Connecticut State University for a 1:30 pm NE-10 contest.

NOTES
The win moves Adelphi into a three-way tie for second place in the NE-10's Southwest Division, alongside Saint Rose and Le Moyne.
