First Half Efficiency Helps Men's Basketball Towards 87-75 Victory Against Assumption

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University men's basketball finished shooting a season-best 60.0 percent from the field to help hold on for an 87-75 win against Assumption in Northeast-10 Conference action earlier today at the Center For Recreation and Sport.

Five players reached double-figures for the Panthers (17-5/9-5 NE-10) this afternoon led by 22 from Michael Coffey. The sophomore added six rebounds and three assists. Anthony Libroia notched 16 points and seven assists while Manny Suarez posted 11 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, and three steals. Freshmen Tavon Ginyard and Jack Laffey combined for 25 points.

Declan Soukup led the Greyhound (6-13/2-12 NE-10) effort with 19 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Julian Aiken came off the bench to register 16 points, including 11 in the second half.

The Brown and Gold shot a blistering 65.5 percent (19-for-29) from the field in the first half to build a 25-point halftime lead. Included in the efficiency were seven 3-pointers, led by Coffey's three. Leading 11-6, Adelphi jumped out to a 9-0 run to create a 14-point margin with 12:55 remaining in the half. Another spurt of 14-4 in the final seven minutes helped build the 46-21 halftime advantage.

Coffey led the effort in the first 20 minutes with 10 points to go along with five points while Libroia dished out six assists to match his six points. Manny Suarez also filled the stat sheet with six points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals in 13 minutes of action.

The Greyhounds managed just six made field goals in the opening half, shooting 23.1 percent from the field (6-for-26). Soukup led the visitors with nine points, going 4-for-5 from the charity stripe.

Assumption continued to chip away in the second half, cutting the deficit to nine points with 2:53 left after a jumper from Justin Tuckson. Reilly Reid brought the Greyhounds to within seven a minute later, however, Suarez came up with a steal and dunk with 1:12 remaining to push the momentum back to the Brown and Gold.

The visiting Greyhounds were able to improve to 55.6 percent (20-for-36) shooting in the second half that included 13 points from Tuckson to help outscore the Panthers 54-41 in the second period. However, 22 points combined from Libroia and Coffey helped secure the victory for Adelphi.

The Panthers next travel to Manhattan to face Pace at 7:30 pm for a NE-10 Southwest Division matchup.

- Libroia moved to 23rd on the all-time Adelphi scoring list with a career total of 1,191 after today's contest
