Women's Basketball Dropped by Saint Anselm, 62-42

Manchester, N.H. -- Trailing by double digits at the half, the Adelphi University women's basketball team was unable to mount a comeback en route to dropping a 62-42 decision to the Saint Anselm College Hawks on the road on Tuesday night.

Calli Balfour led the scoring for the Brown and Gold (13-8, 6-7 NE-10) on the night, as she posted 13 points, two blocks and three steals off the bench. Adelphi got just six points from their starting five on the night, as Sierra Clark and Julia Gnieser combined for 15 points, and Natalie Fekula added six points and a team-high seven rebounds -- also off the bench. Samnell Vonleh posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds for Saint Anselm (12-6, 8-5 NE-10).

The Panthers trailed by an early 6-0 margin, but took their first lead of the contest at 9-8 behind a Balfour triple with 3:23 remaining in the opening stanza. While the Hawks scored the next five points, the Brown and Gold rallied to tie in the final 1:31 as Fekula and Ashley Gomez both put in two-points to knot the score at 13-13.

The second period was all Saint Anselm, as they used a big rebounding advantage to create a 15-4 scoring margin and take a double-figure lead into the break. The home team scored 10 of the first 12 points of the quarter, holding the Panthers to just a 2-16 performance from the floor in the second. In the opening half, the Hawks held a 31-17 advantage on the glass, despite both teams shooting under 30% from the floor.

Unable to cut the deficit to single digits in the second half, the Hawks opened up a 20-point lead behind a Candance Andrews three-pointer to open the fourth quarter. The lead expanded to a game-high 27 with 6:23 remaining, before the Panthers scored 13 of the final 19 points of the contest, where Gnieser netted all seven of her points.

Adelphi returns home on Saturday, January 30th for a 1:30 pm contest versus Assumption College when the team will also welcome back the program's alumni for Alumni Day.
