Garden City, N.Y. -- Leading by 13 heading to the fourth quarter, the Adelphi University women's basketball team was outscored by the visiting Pace University Setter by a 25-4 margin in the final 10 minutes to fall, 71-63, in a Northeast-10 Conference contest on Saturday afternoon inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
The loss snaps Adelphi's (10-4, 3-3 NE-10) five-game winning streak and drops them to .500 in conference play on the season.
Sierra Clark totaled a team-high 22 points in the setback for the Brown and Gold, and fell one rebound short of a double-double off the bench with nine. Also in double figures for Adelphi was
Ashley Gomez, who totaled 16 points and seven boards, Gabriella Rubin led a trio of Setters (7-6, 3-3 NE-10) as she dropped a game-high 25 points, while Jaclyn Oskam recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
In a high-scoring opening quarter, the Panthers and Setters were even at 20-20 when
Niajah Morgan stole the ball off of Rubin with just two seconds to play, leading to
Haley Parks' deep three at the buzzer to put the Brown and Gold ahead, 23-20. With the two teams evenly matched over the first 20 minutes, the Setters held a slim 15-14 scoring advantage in the second quarter to put Adelphi in the locker room up two, 37-35.
The Panthers opened the third on a 12-2 run which saw Clark and Gomez combined for all 12 points to take a 48-37 lead with 6:54 to play in the quarter. After Rubin sank a three to cut the lead to eight, the Panthers ran off the next nine points to increase their advantage to a game-high 17, a run that saw
Lauren Nuss sink a three and Clark, Gomez and Morgan all convert for two.Â
With the Adelphi lead at 59-46 heading into the final quarter, the Setters scored 10 of the first 13 points of the frame to cut the lead to single digits. Plagued by a series of turnovers, the Panthers were also held scoreless by the Pace defense as the visitors increased their scoring run to 19-3 and took a 65-62 lead with 2:37 to play. After Gomez went 1-for-2 at the line after getting fouled, Rubin drove to the basket for two in the paint with just a minute to play and the Setters proceeded to go 4-of-6 at the line to ice the contest in the final minute.Â
Adelphi is back in action on Wednesday, January 6 when they head to Franklin Pierce University for a 5:30 pm NE-10 contest.Â
