Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Adelphi Athletics

Women's Hoops Silenced by Ravens, 59-44

Rindge, N.H. -- Despite three players in double figures in scoring, the Adelphi University women's basketball team dropped a second straight Northeast-10 Conference contest and fell to the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University on the road on Wednesday night, 59-44.

Three players were responsible for the bulk of Adelphi's (10-5, 3-4 NE-10) scoring in the setback, as Sierra Clark, Samantha Brenner and Ashley Gomez all tallied double figures. Clark came off the bench for a team-high 15 points, while Brenner chipped in 14 points on 6-11 shooting and Gomez flirted with a triple-double behind 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Kara Charette (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Jasmyne Fogle (10 points, 13 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles for the Ravens (7-5, 4-4 NE-10) while Natalie Bastian also added 15 points.

In a low-scoring contest where Adelphi struggled from the floor and shot just under 29% for the game, Brenner tallied 10 of her points in the first quarter, but was forced to sit for much of the next 10 minutes after picking up two fouls. With Adelphi leading by five at 8-3 and 10-5 in the early going, the Ravens rallied to turn the contest around and took a two-point, 16-14 lead at the close of the first 10 minutes.

After Clark and Bastian traded buckets in the second quarter's opening minute, both teams went scoreless for the next six until Gomez drove to the hoop for two with 3:57 remaining to knot the game at 18-18 and combined with Emily Brandt to go 3-4 at the line to give Adelphi a 21-18 lead with three minutes to play. From that point, Dana Campbell scored the next seven points unaswered for the hosts before Clark sank the final two points of the half to put Adelphi in the locker room down just two, 25-23.

With Brenner back in the game, her jumped tied the score at 25-25 just 39 seconds into the third. A 9-2 run over the next four minutes gave the hosts what was then a game-high nine point lead, and Adelphi faced a deficit for the remainder of the game. Charette scored 10 of her points in the third quarter to push Franklin Pierce's lead to double figures, and she sank two from the line to close out a 19-11 quarter and put the lead at 10, 44-34 at the close of the third. The fourth quarter unfolded in similar fashion, as neither team was able to get a scoring run going from the floor. The Ravens outscored the Panthers by a 15-10 margin en route to the victory, successfully converting on 13 of their 14 free throw opportunities to secure the game.

The Panthers return to the CRS on Saturday, January 9 when they host the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College in a 1:30 pm NE-10 contest.
