East Stroudsburg, Penn. - Two first half goals by the home Warriors were enough to beat the Adelphi University field hockey team on Sunday afternoon, as the Panthers fell on the road in a 4-1 final decision.
The goalie tandem of
Kelly Serrao and
Amanda Gargiulo made six saves for the Panthers (0-2), but were faced with relentless pressure from a Warrior (2-0) offense that took 17 shots in the game and held an 11-2 lead in corners. Adelphi was limited to three shot opportunities in the contest, with one each from
Kristen Bagley,
Molly Cuevas and
Emily Power.
The Panthers' only shot of the half from Power was stopped at the 11:30 mark, and Adelphi fell behind just over 15 minutes into the first half when Ally Roth beat Gargiulo to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later, East Stroudsburg doubled their advantage with a goal from Desiraye Mack, and the Panthers headed into the locker room down 2-0.
The home squad doubled their advantage in the second half, opening up a 4-0 lead with a Sydney McCarthy goal (37:38) and a successful penalty opportunity converted by Roth. With ESU dominating the time of possession, the Brown and Gold's lone goal of the contest came off the stick of Cuevas, who scored in the 65th minute off of a feed from
Lena Pollich.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, September 12 when they host Pace in a 1 pm contest on Motamed Field.
