Garden City, N.Y. - Courtesy of two goals from senior
Molly Cuevas, the Adelphi University field hockey team pikced up its first victory of the season behind a 3-0 shutout of the Pace University Setters, a conference opponent in Adelphi's non-conference schedule, on Saturday afternoon.
Cuevas led Adelphi (1-2) on the day with two goals, while
Kristen Bagley chipped in the third Brown and Gold goal.
Rachel Colvin and
Elizabeth Mercuri each chipped in an asisst on the Panther scoring, as Cuevas' second-half tally was unassisted. In net,
Amanda Gargiulo picked up her first win of the season, stopping all three shots she faced in the 70 minutes of play. The Adelphi team defense limited Pace (1-3) to just six shots all game.
Bagley's first-half goal at the 19:28 mark gave Adelphi a lead they would never relinquish, as the senior fired Mercuri's pass into the net for her first goal of the season. Cuevas got in on the action as the minutes ticked down in the first half, beating Pace keeper Corrine Nocera to give Adelphi a 2-0 halftime lead.
With both teams held largely outside the offensive zone in the second half, Cuevas's early-second half score stood up as the only goal of the second half. Gargiulo's prescence in net worked well for the Panthers, as she made two of her three saves in the second half.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, September 15 when they travel to Southern Connecticut State University for a 6 pm contest.
