Bloomsburg, Penn. - A shot from
Jamie Ahrens as the clock expired off a corner from
Lena Pollich was pushed aside as Bloomsburg held on for a 1-0 victory against Adelphi University field hockey in the 2015 season opener.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Panthers (0-1) outshoot the Huskies (1-0) 9-6 and hold a 7-4 advantage in corners, the host was able to strike first in the second half as Mackenzie Wirth scored from the top of the circle into the bottom left of the cage off a pass from Abby Sauder.
Molly Cuevas had two attempts to tie the contest in the 57th minute, however, Lindsay Cassel made two of her 11 saves in the game to preserve the shutout.
Pollich was able to get the quick corner to Ahrens in the final stages of regulation in front of the cage, but once again, Cassel was up for the task to clear the play as time expired. Ahrens and Pollich also opened up in the game in the third minute with back-to-back corners and shots that Cassel was forced to turn away.
Mary Plotas led the Brown and Gold with a game-high six shots, all of which were on target. Ahrens and Cuevas each attempted three shots while
Olivia Nowokunski and
Kristen Bagley put forth one a piece. Meanwhile,
Amanda Gargiulo made four saves while the back line combined for two defensive saves.
The Panthers remain on the road for a Sunday afternoon contest at East Stroudsburg. The contest is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
