Women's Soccer Draws with Merrimack, 1-1

Garden City N.Y. – Despite leading for nearly the entire 90 minutes of regulation, the Adelphi University women's soccer team conceded a late goal to the Merrimack College Warriors and recorded a draw for the second straight contest, 1-1.

Awarded a penalty kick in the 31st minute, senior Taylor Salmon successfully converted on the only goal for the Brown and Gold in the contest. Salmon's goal was one of 14 shots that Adelphi (5-2-2, 3-0-2 NE-10) took in the opening half, as the Panthers dominated the time of possession. The Panthers had several opportunities to lengthen their lead, with Jeanine Nunez and Kelsey Simpson combining to take half of those 14 shots for the Brown and Gold. However, Merrimack (5-1-3, 2-1-2 NE-10) keeper Molly Meehan was up to the challenge and six saves in the opening half to keep the Panther lead at 1-0.

For their part, Merrimack played a total of 22 players in the first half, but got off just one shot in the entire 45 minutes. Jorgi Adee's shot was stopped by Anne Marie Ulliac in the 10th minute.

The Warrior defense and second keeper Meghan Gulbrandsen did their best to keep Adelphi out of the goal in the second half, allowing just seven total shots and making two saves. On the offensive side, however, Merrimack had few opportunities to score and were unable not to net the equalizer for over 40 minutes. With 3:25 left in the game, the Blue and Gold benefited from a foul call and Jenna Savi, the NE-10's leader in points, trickled through the defense off the ensuing free kick on to the left flank to beat Ulliac and knot the score 1-1.

The two teams took just three shots combined in the double overtime, and Adelphi's best chance to win the game came in the 94th minute, but Morgan Santarro's one-on-one opportunity sailed over the bar. After 110 minutes, the score remained deadlocked and the Panthers came away with their second straight NE-10 draw, 1-1.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, October 3 when they host the Falcons of Bentley University in a 3 pm NE-10 contest as a part of Family Weekend.
