Garden City, N.Y. -- Four first half goals, with two coming off the stick of
Molly Cuevas, led the Adelphi University field hockey team past the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday night at Motamed Field, 4-0.
The Panthers (5-3, 2-1 NE-10) got on the board early as Cuevas' first tally came just over three minutes into the contest for a 1-0 Adelphi lead. The early goal set the tone for Adelphi offensively in the half, as the Panthers outshot the visiting Owls (3-5, 0-2 NE-10) by a 16-2 margin in the opening half. Ten minutes later, the Panthers extended their advantage to 3-0 within the span of a minute as both
Elizabeth Mercuri and
Olivia Nowokunski beat the Owls' starting keeper Audrey Dolloff to force the visitors into timeout.
The Panthers continued to keep the pressure on Dolloff for the entirety of the half, but she stood up to the challenge by making nine total saves in the half. With less than four minutes to go in the half, Cuevas' second tally capped off the scoring and ensured the Brown and Gold a 4-0 halftime lead.
In the second half,
Lena Pollich got Adelphi off to a quick start just 2:41 in, as she extended the Adelphi lead to 5-0. The Panther defense continued to deny the Owls much of any scoring opportunities, as the Blue and White took just two total shots in the half against the combination of
Amanda Gargiulo and
Kelly Serrao. Adelphi finished off the night with a goal from
Kristen Bagley, as one of her team-high six shot attempts on the night found its mark after
Emily Power hit the post, to close out the game 6-0 in favor of the Panthers.
The Brown and Gold return to action on Saturday, October 3rd when they travel to American International College for a 5 pm Northeast-10 Conference contest.
