Springfield, Mass. -- Just one of the Adelphi University field hockey team's 22 total shots on Saturday afternoon found the back of the net, but
Kristen Bagley's goal in the 52nd minute was enough to lead the Panthers past the Yellow Jackets of American International, 1-0, in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday evening.
The Panthers (6-3, 3-1 NE-10) held a 22-11 advantage in total shots on the night, as Bagley,
Molly Cuevas and
Lena Pollich combined to take 12 over the course of the game. The two teams were evenly matched over the first 35 minutes, and although the Panthers doubled the Yellow Jackets in total shots (8-4), both Taylor Ross and
Amanda Gargiulo made two saves to send the game into halftime in a scoreless tie.
The Panthers took six shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but Ross stood tall to the challenge in making five saves. However, the Panthers would not be denied a goal on their next trip up the field, as Bagley finally broke through to give Adelphi the 1-0 lead. From that point, AIC challenged for the tie, but none of the Yellow Jackets' five ensuing shots could beat Gargiulo, who made four second-half saves to preserve the shutout.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, October 7, when they head to nearby Brookville, N.Y. to take on the Pioneers of LIU Post in an NE-10 contest at 4 pm.
