Field Hockey Defeats Saint Michael's for First NE-10 Win of Season, 4-1

Colchester, Vt. – Remaining on the road looking to get back on the winning track, the Adelphi University field hockey team upended Saint Michael's earlier this afternoon 4-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action.

Outshooting the host Purple Knights (3-4, 0-3 NE-10) 14-0 in the first period, the Panthers (4-3, 1-1 NE-10) were able to create one goal with those opportunities. In the 19th minute, Elizabeth Mercuri collected a loose ball and banked in the goal off the left post to put the Brown and Gold ahead. Also in the first period, Adelphi created a 4-1 penalty corner margin. Meanwhile, Abigail Bowie came up with eight saves for Saint Michael's.

The Panthers began the second half by creating the same advantages and this time, finishing. Less than four minutes into the period, Samantha Nizich set up Lena Pollich with an empty net shot to build the advantage to 2-0. Nizich revered roles on the next goal by scoring off a pass from Emily Power in the 45th minute. Nizich tipped in the pass from the center of the circle into the left post.

The final tally of the afternoon for the Brown and Gold came a short time later in the 49th minute to go up 4-0. Jamie Ahrens took advantage of a penalty stroke to score her third goal of the season. The Purple Knights avoided the shutout with a goal in the 59th minute as Carolyn Avery put in a rebound shot from Abby Dusha.

Adelphi finished with a 26-3 shot advantage to force Bowie to make 14 saves with the team making one defensive save.

The Panther return home this Tuesday to host Southern Connecticut for a 6:00 pm NE-10 contest on Motamed Field.
