Garden City, N.Y. - The freshman and junior combo of
Bailey Riedel and
Mandy Stanislovaitis paced the Adelphi University volleyball team with 24 kills combined on Wednesday night as the Panthers swept past Georgian Court University 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-19) on their home floor.
Riedel and Stanislovaitis each notched 12 kills on the night for Adelphi (8-4), as Riedel hit a sparkling .462 with zero attack errors. Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week
McKenna Clawson chipped in nine kills, two block assists and five digs for a well-rounded night, while
Madison Canestrari chipped in five kills, one solo block and four block assists.
Megan Manierski led the offense with 37 assists, while
Sierra Crook and
Rebecca Seeba combined for 34 digs.
From 8-8 in the first set, the Brown and Gold never trailed again as the Panther attack got going. A 10-3 scoring run, capped by a kill from Canestrari, put the Adelphi lead up to 18-11 and a kill from
Stephanie Sokolich put the Panthers at the 20-point mark a short time later. A Stanislovaitis kill gave the Panthers set point at 24-17, and although the Lions (6-7) put together a brief, late charge, Canestrari blocked back a Taylor Winchester attempt to secure the opening set for the home team, 25-20.Â
The second set proved to be nearly a mirror of the first as a 7-7 tie became a 10-7 Adelphi lead behind a Stanislovaitis kill, a
Maria Buzzelli ace and a Riedel kill. The Golden Lions pulled within one point on five more occasions, the last coming at 17-16 on a kill by Peggy Rosario. From that point, the Panthers ran off eight of the next 11 points to close out the second set on a Golden Lion miscue, 25-19.
Adelphi led for the duration of the third set, opening up a lead as large as 18-9 midway through. Although the Golden Lions rallied to keep the score close for much of the final points, Adelphi scored three of the final five points to take the set and match, as a Georgian Court attempt was blocked back by Canestrari and
Hailey Yates on the final point.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, September 26 when they host Assumption College in a 1 pm Northeast-10 Conference contest.Â
