Easton, Mass. -- Stonehill's Erika Kelly played a part in all three goals (2G, 1A) to lead the Skyhawks past the Adelphi University field hockey team, 3-0, in the Panthers' Northeast-10 Conference opener on Wednesday night.
While Adelphi (3-3, 0-1 NE-10) trailed by just one in total shots (13-12) on the night, the Panthers mustered just four shots on goal to the Skyhawks' 11.
Kristen Bagley was responsible of two of Adelphi's four shots at net, while
Molly Cuevas and
Mary Plotas each tested Stonehill keeper Sara Freedman once, but she stopped all four shots. To her credit,
Amanda Gargiulo made seven saves to keep the Panthers in the game for the full 70 minutes, as they could not manage to score on any of their 10 penalty corners in the game.
Adelphi took three shots in the opening seven minutes, including both of Cuevas and Plotas' offerings on goal, but came up empty. The Skyhawks cracked through off a penalty corner in the 13th minute, as Sarah Morse tipped in a drive off the right post from the pass by Kelly from the top of the arc to give Stonehill a 1-0 lead. Both teams took two shots in the remainder of the half, but the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Skyhawks at halftime.
Much of the second half went by with the Panthers trailing 1-0, but Kelly made sure the game was out of reach as she added two goals late in the half. At the 54:33 mark, she fired a rebound from seven yards out past Gargiulo to make the score 2-0, before spinning past two defenders for the score in the 65th minute to end the game 3-0.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, September 26th when they travel to St. Michael's College for a 1 pm NE-10 contest.
