Shirley, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's volleyball team returned to New York from their swing through the West Coast on Wednesday evening to face off against local rival Dowling College. Recording 35 kills, the Golden Lions swept the Panthers in three sets (26-24, 25-19, 25-18) to come away with the victory.
Shelby Stoner hit .400 over the course of the match with a team-high nine kills for Adelphi (5-4), while
Mandy Stanislovaitis had eight.
Megan Manierski led the offense with 23 assists, and
Sierra Crook anchored the defense with 15 digs. The Panthers did their best to stymie a Golden Lion (6-2) attack with 15 blocks, as
Madison Canestrari chipped in four block assists with Stoner, Manierski and
Bailey Riedel adding three.
The Panthers trailed for much of the opening set before rallying to take their first lead which lengthed to 17-14 on a Stoner kill. The Panthers held a set point at 24-23, but a service error gave the Golden Lions new life and they took the set on a Stanislovaitis miscue.
The second set was all Dowling, as they sprinted out to a 14-5 lead and never looked back from there; although the Panthers pulled closer later, one of Dragana Jelovac's six kills on the night gave the hosts a two set lead.
In the third set, the Panthers put up their best fight, leading for much of the early going and taking a 13-11 lead on a
McKenna Clawson kill. They wouldn't lead after that point, however, as the Golden Lions scored 14 of the final 19 points to close out the victory.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, September 19 when they hose their home-opening tri-match. The Panthers will face Le Moyne in an NE-10 match at 11 am, before taking on the Molloy Lions at 3 pm.
