Volleyball Takes Two 3-1 Wins vs. Le Moyne and Molloy in Saturday Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University volleyball team came away with a pair of 3-1 wins in Saturday's home-opening tri-match, dispatching Le Moyne (25-19, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23) and Molloy (22-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-15) inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.

Game 1
Averaging five kills a set, senior Shelby Stoner totaled 20 kills on a .533 hitting percentage to lead the Panthers (6-4, 1-0 NE-10) while also adding eight blocks. McKenna Clawson notched 14 kills in her home debut with Megan Manierski pacing the offense behind 49 assists. Sierra Crook held the back line with 24 digs,

An 8-0 run in the first set helped set up an 18-7 lead for the Panthers, capped off by a Stoner kill. The Dolphins rallied to cut the deficit to 24-19, however, Stoner once again attacked the net for game-clinching kill.

Playing tighter in the second game, the Brown and Gold needed to rally from a 19-15 Le Moyne lead to even the score at 21 with a Rebecca Seeba service ace. Stoner once again helped push Adelphi to victory with back-to-back kills.

Looking to avoid the sweep, Le Moyne claimed the lead at 15-14 in the third game before Stoner helped give the Panthers a 20-18 advantage on another kill. However, a 4-0 spurt helped Le Moyne claim a 26-24 win that included a kill from Jessica Miller.

Facing a deficit late in the fourth game, the Panthers rallied to avoid a fifth set with a 5-1 run to end the set at 25-23 and take the first match of the day 3-1.

Game 2
Clawson led a trio of Panthers in double-digit kills with 14, while Clawson chipped in 13 and Mandy Stanislovaitis had 12. Megan Manierski led the team with 37 assists, while Sierra Crook racked up 20 digs. As a squad, the Panthers had a strong day blocking, led by six from Madison Canestrari (3S, 3A) to go along with her five kills; Clawson and Stoner each added five (5A), while Bailey Riedel chipped in two block assists with her six kills.

The Lions sprinted out to a 6-1 lead in the opening set, and barely looked back from there. Midway through, consecutive kills from Riedel and Clawson closed the gap to 14-13, but the Panthers were unable to ever tie the score and fell 25-22.

Two early ties indicated the second set could be a similar back and forth affair, but a 7-1 run capped by a Molloy miscue turned a 6-6 tie into a 13-7 Adelphi lead. The Lions would get no closer than five points the rest of the way, and four kills, three by Stoner, in the final six points gave the Panthers a 25-13 set.

The third set was more of the same from Adelphi, as the Panthers scored 10 of the opening 13 points to take command. Again, the Lions managed to get within five points twice, the final time coming at 19-14 on a Danielle Williams kill. However, a service error handed the ball back to Adelphi and kills by Censtrari and Stanislovaitis helped hammer home a 25-14 set and 2-1 Adelphi lead.

The Panthers led the fourth set for the duration from 1-0 down, using a a five-point spurt to open up a 19-10 lead and never looked back. Amanda Borges came off the bench to hammer home a kill and give Adelphi match point, which they duly coverted on a Molloy error to take the match.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, September 23 when they host Georgian Court in a 7 pm non-conference contest.
