Garden City, N.Y. – Two goals from
Laura Gomez helped the Adelphi University women's soccer team hold off 25th ranked New Haven 2-1 earlier tonight in a tough Northeast-10 Conference matchup.
With both teams battling for control of play early in the contest, the Panthers began to go on the aggressive by creating six shots compared to not yielding one to the Chargers. One of those shots for the Brown and Gold turned into the lone tally as Gomez completed a cross from
Nicole Forte after a few bounces in the box during the 30th minute.
In addition to the goal advantage, Adelphi also manufactured two corners kicks. On the same side of the field, Deandra Nash came up with two saves for the Chargers.
To start the second half, the Brown and Gold continued to offensive pressure as
Sarah Barone Stern had three opportunities denied, two saved and one off the post. Adelphi continued to keep possession on their end of the field before New Haven was able to get their first shot in the 80th minute.
In that 80th minute, the first shot for the Chargers turned into the equalizing goal. With a ball falling to her feet and behind the defenders, Sierra Stein dribbled a quarter of the field and drove a shot to the top right corner to tie the score at 1-1.
With the momentum seeming to shift towards New Haven despite the large shot differential, Gomez struck once again to put the Panthers ahead. In the 85th minute,
Jeanine Nunez crossed a ball from the right side that landed at the doorstep for Gomez who finished her second goal of the game and put the Brown and Gold ahead for good.
The Panthers finished the contest with a 15-2 advantage in shots while also totaling five corners compared to none for the New Haven. Nash kept her team in the game by stopping seven shots.
Looking ahead, Adelphi returns to Motamed Field for a 3:00 pm match up against Saint Michael's this Saturday.
