Garden City, N.Y. – Two second half goals propelled the Adelphi University men's soccer team to a 2-0 Northeast-10 Conference win against New Haven earlier this evening on Motamed Field. The match marked the conference-opener for both programs.
Despite controlling the possession of play in the first half with 11 shots and three corners, the Panthers were unable to convert a strike in the opening 45 minutes. Stephen Sasso made five saves for the Chargers to keep the contest scoreless. Meanwhile,
Toni Soler created four shots that included three going on-target.
Continuing to put the pressure on in the second period, the Brown and Gold finally cracked through with a goal in the 68
th minute.
James Thristino sent a cross that
Caelan Hueber put the finishing touches on his third goal of the season.
Looking for the insurance, Adelphi went up 2-0 with a little more than 10 minutes to play. Soler initially drove a long distance shot into the box to force Sasso off his line and punch the ball. However, the deflection was not deep enough as
Matt Giaconelli connected on the header into the bottom of the net.
The Panthers finished the contest with a 21-2 advantage in shots while also converting six corners and yielding only one. Sassso finished his evening with nine saves for the Chargers while
Sergio Reyes made one save for Adelphi.
The Brown and Gold start the first of two straight road matches this Saturday with a trip to Syracuse to face Le Moyne at 2:00 pm.
