Millersville Scoring Burst Aids Defeat Of Men's Soccer 3-2

Millersville, Pa. – Three straight goals in the first half allowed host Millersville to knock off the Adelphi University men's soccer team 3-2 earlier this afternoon despite delays to the start and during the contest.

The Panthers (1-1-1) jumped ahead right out of the gate as a strike in the second minute gave the Brown and Gold an early 1-0 lead. With the ball outside the box, Matt Giaconelli ripped a shot that beat the goalkeeper to put Adelphi ahead.

However, Millersville (3-0-1) responded not once, but three times within the next 12 minutes to take a commanding lead early on. A Panther turnover helped Jaime Vazquez put in a 1-on-1 goal to even the score in the eighth minute. Three minutes later, Vazques helped the Marauders take the lead with a finish in front of the net. Kyle Finsterbush put the final touches on the scoring outburst less than three minutes later with a direct goal off a set piece after a foul.

A scoring drought then ensued for more than 60 minutes before the Panthers came within one goal during the 75th minute as Caelan Hueber struck off a John Stojcevski assist. However, the Brown and Gold were unable to find the equalizer in the final 15 minutes as Millersville was able to hang on for the victory.

Despite the setback, Adelphi controlled a 21-11 advantage in shots that included a 13-5 mark in the opening half. However, Millersville goalkeeper Kohl Orner made seven saves to keep his team out in front throughout the game.

The Brown and Gold return home this Tuesday to face New Haven for the Northeast-10 Conference opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Motamed Field.
