Garden City, NY – After sixteen complete innings of play,
Brenna Martini hit a two run home run to win the first round game against Wilmington (Del.) University. The Panthers and Wildcats picked up where they left off in the top of the 13th inning Saturday morning after playing to a 1-1 draw Friday evening.
Wilmington was first to get on the scoreboard in the top of the second ininng, after Danielle Bradley drew a walked and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Colby Wyatt doubled to left-center to pick up the lone RBI and give Wilmington the 1-0 lead.
Nicole Camera drew a walk in the bottom of the fifth inning to get things started for the Panthers.
Mary O'Reilly reached on a bunt that Wilmington thought was going to spin foul, and both advanced on a textbook sacrifice bunt by
Christina Palmenteri. King found the outfield grass on the first pitch, allowing Camera to scamper home and tie the score at 1-1.
The following 10 innings went by scoreless as the visiting Wildcats stranded seven on base, including two in the top of the 16th inning. Martini blasted the two-run shot after wink singled through the left side to lead off the inning. Mapes picked up 18 strikeouts in the win, five of which came in innings 12-16. The team advances to Game Three to face the winner of Game One, Caldwell University.
