No. 4 Softball Advances to Championship with 7-3 Victory Over No. 1 Caldwell

Garden City, N.Y. - After finishing the first round game against No. 5 Wilmington University (Del.) Saturday morning, the Panthers took the momentum into the second round and defeated No. 1 Caldwell University, 7-3 to advance to the Championship game slated for 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 10. Caldwell drops to the losers bracket to face No. 5 Wilmington at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Krista King led off with an infield single to start off the game, and advanced to second on a bloop hit by Jordan Catalano. In scoring position, King hustled home on an infield single by Victoria Wink to take the 1-0 lead. The Cougars threatened in the bottom half of the inning, but were unable to score as Lindsay Mapes got the final batter to fly out, stranding two on base.

Caldwell's Amber Padilla retired the Brown and Gold in order over the next three innings, including a double play ball and a strikeout to end the fourth. The Red and White tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with Caitlin McCready leading off with a single through the right side. Taking advantage of a Panther miscue, she scored on a wild pitch to even the score at one apiece.

To start the fifth Adelphi got two runners on by way of a Nicole Camera double and Mary O'Reilly walk. A throwing error by Padilla allowed King to reach and Camera to score to take the lead once more. Two more runs scored to make it 4-1 in the middle of the fifth.

Unsatisfied, Caldwell registered back-to-back singles, causing a pitching change. From that they produced two runs by way of a throwing error and a bases loaded walk to make it 4-3, still in favor of Adelphi. To lead off the sixth, Megan Lewis added one insurance run with a solo shot over the left field fence as Catalano and Brenna Martini collected back-to-back doubles to make it 7-3.

Mapes and Jasmine Ennabe split the pitching duties, combining for six hits and four strikeouts, as Ennabe picked up the win for her ninth of the season.

The team will return to action on Sunday, May 10 in the Championship game and face the winning team from the Wilmington (Del.)/Caldwell matchup slated for 10 a.m.
