Garden City, N.Y. - Behind a strong pitching performance from
Lindsay Mapes in game one and an explosion of offense in game two, the Adelphi University softball team swept a doubleheader from Northeast-10 Conference opponent Pace University on Wednesday afternoon on Ficke Field, 4-0 and 9-1.
Brenna Martini, the reigning NE-10 Rookie of the Week, totaled five RBIs across the two games while hitting her sixth home run of the season in game one.
Jordan Catalano went 4-5 at the plate in the double dip for Adelphi (14-14, 7-3 NE-10), scoring three runs toal, while
Christina Palmenteri also drove in three runs in the nightcap. Mapes hurled a complete game shutout in the opening game, scattering four hits and four strikeouts across the seven innings.
Jasmine Ennabe picked up the win in the circle in game two, pitching four of the five innings and striking out eight. To close things out in game two,
Nicole Camera pitched the final half inning and struck out the side. Larissa Labs recorded the only RBI on the day for Pace (14-8, 6-4 NE-10)
Game 1After surrendering a one out triple in the top of the first, Mapes settled in and ended the Settlers' threat with a foulout and a strikeout. After getting a runner on in both the first and seconds, the Brown and Gold broke through in the bottom of the third after
Krista King reached on an error by first baseman Natalie Gellos. After Catalano singled,
Victoria Wink flew out to center leaving two on with two outs. Martini brought both runners home on a double to right, before
Jaclyn Binstock kept the offense going by driving Martini in with a single up the middle.
The three runs were more than enough for Mapes, who was forced to find her way out of trouble just once in the remaining innings. In the top of the fifth, Ashley Lew led off with a single before the Setters put another runner on with one out, but Mapes retired Tara Bernstein and Jeane Drury on flyouts to center to keep the Setters off the board. Martini led off the fifth with a home run for the Panthers' fourth run, before Mapes retired the side in order in the sixth to pick up the win.
Game 2After Ennabe struck out the side in the top of the first, the Adelphi offense went to work. With one out, Catalano singled and Wink walked before Martini drove in both with a triple to right center. Binstock drove in Martini with a groundout, leaving the bases clear with two down.
Megan Lewis worked out a walk to start the second leg of the Adelphi scoring, as Camera singled and
Mary O'Reilly also reached on balls to load the bases. Palmenteri cleared the bases with a double of her own to make the score 6-0 and advanced to third on the throw, before King singled her in with the Panthers having batted around.
After a pitching change, singles by Catalano and Wink led to two more Brown and Gold runs, before Martini finally popped out to end the inning. In all, the Panthers scored nine runs on seven hits.
While Pace had opportunities to cut into the lead, Ennabe was up to the challenge each time. After allowing a run courtesy of two walks and a sac fly in the third, she got out of a bases-loaded, one out jam in the fourth by striking out both batters swinging to end her afternoon before Camera struck out the side in the ensuing inning to end the game.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 11 when they travel to New Haven, Conn. to face off against the Chargers of the University of New Haven in a Southwest Division doubleheader.
