West Haven, CT – After resuming play to the halted game that started in Garden City, the Adelphi University softball program played to a final 5-4 decision in favor of the Chargers, but won the series by picking up a 3-2 victory in game two. Adelphi is locked at 15-15 overall and stands at 8-4 in league play as the hosting Chargers fall to 8-11-1 on the season and 6-6 in the conference.
Krista King completed the doubleheader going a team-leading 5-for-6 at the plate, with one run scored and one run batted in.
Jaclyn Binstock matched King's performance with five hits on the day as teammate
Christina Palmenteri scored three runs Saturday afternoon.
Lindsay Mapes and
Nicole Camera combined for the win and save, respectively in game two, allowing four hits and striking out three.
Game One
The first game of the day started with the bases loaded, two outs and
Jasmine Ennabe on the mound, throwing to
Mary O'Reilly, as it was being resumed from March 25. The Chargers were up 2-0 courtesy of a Julie Devlin double to left field, scoring Gabby DeLeo and Liptack. Ennabe worked her way out of the inning, getting the final batter to popup to second.
Adelphi exploded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning, as O'Reilly drew a leadoff walk followed by back-to-back singles that loaded the bases. King singled to the shortstop to allow the first run to cross and cut the Blue and White lead. A single by
Victoria Wink followed by a fielder's choice scored the next two runs for the Panthers to jump out to a 3-2 lead.
Unsatisfied, the hosts tacked on three more runs in the top of the third inning on a three-run home run to left field by Gilly Childs, to make the score 5-3. The next two and a half innings went by scoreless as the Panther defense and bullpen kept the Chargers hitless, stranding two on base. A last-effort push by Adelphi came in the bottom of the sixth inning as
Nicole Camera doubled to center field, scoring Palmenteri, but it was not enough as Vicky Cabral battled in the circle to earn the win.
Game Two
Switching roles, Adelphi acted as the visiting team, finding a way to jump on the scoreboard in the top of the first on two hits and one error. King reached on a single to later steal second and advance all the way home on a Charger throwing fault. Mapes was able to retire the first three New Haven batters in order.
Loading the bases with one out, O'Reilly was able to skip home on an illegal pitch from the Charger mound, to take a 2-0 lead. The third inning went by scoreless for both teams, with one strikeout and two groundouts for the Blue and White in the bottom half. Childs smacked her second home run of the day in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Adelphi lead to one.
A two out rally began in the sixth for the Panthers as
Jordan Catalano singled to the right side, scoring Palmenteri, for a 3-1 lead. The home team made a final push in the last inning with a leadoff single by Toni Schiebe, who was able to advance to second on a Panther miscue. Childs collected her fifth RBI of the afternoon with a single up the middle that scored Schiebe. Camera came in to collect the final three outs of the game, which she did by getting Liptack to ground into a double play, followed by a Cabral groundout.
The team will return to action on Wednesday, April 15 as they take on the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University beginning at 2:00 p.m. in New Haven, Connecticut.
