Explosive Offense Leads Softball to Non-Conference Sweep at U. Sciences

Philadelphia, PA – Reaching double-digit hits in both contests against the University of Sciences in Philadelphia, the Adelphi University softball team earned back-to-back wins, 20-2 and 6-1 Monday afternoon. This improves the Panthers to 12-14 overall as the hosting Devils drop to 6-16.

Every member of the Brown and Gold lineup in game one registered a multi-hit game with Krista King going 4-4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Megan Lewis drove in five runs and scored twice and Victoria Wink and Brenna Martini each collected four RBIs, combining to score six times. Jaclyn Binstock and Mary O'Reilly together had five RBIs, as they each had their first home runs of the season in game two.

Game 1
The Panthers played to five innings, scoring in all but the third. The top of the first inning featured a quick 3-0 lead courtesy of five hits. Jordan Catalano scored the first run of the game after Martini singled to right field, advancing on the throw to set up second and third with one out. Lewis doubled to the right side scoring both baserunners.

The Northeast-10 rookie of the week blasted her fifth homerun this season in the bottom of the second resulting in three RBIs and the Panthers taking a 7-0 lead. The third run went by scoreless, making way for the fourth in which the visitors scored their highest amount of the afternoon. Seven runs came by way of seven hits and two Devil miscues, to give the Panthers a 14-0 lead.

The hosts were able to jump on the board in bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on three hits. Ashley Lewis got herself into scoring position after singling to center and advancing on an error. Jenna Hohenberger homered to left field, scoring Lewis.

Adelphi batted through the lineup in the top of the fifth inning, in which they took advantage of several errors made by the home team. Binstock reached first on an error and one out to be later brought in by a Lewis double to right center for the first of six runs.  King singled with one out, allowing Melaney Reichelt and Nicole Camera to score. The final two runs came from Christina Palmenteri and King scored, courtesy of a Wink double to center field, for a 20-run lead. Camera retired the final three U. Sciences batters in order, to earn the victory for starter Lindsay Mapes, who struck out five through the first four innings.

Game Two
Jasmine Ennabe threw a complete game, giving up just four hits to the Devils and allowing one run. Three runs were scored by Adelphi in the top of the first inning, which started with a leadoff single by King.  Martini's sacrifice fly with one out scored King and Binstock's homerun with two outs accounted for the other two runs.

The next two innings went by scoreless, until the Panthers struck again in the top of the fourth. Camera reached on an infield bunt and stole second to put herself in scoring position. With ease she crossed home as O'Reilly registered her first home run of the year to left field. The University of Sciences started the fourth with a single and double, to have runners on with no outs. Hohenberger grounded out but scored Jackie Keifer in the process, trailing Adelphi by 5.

One more run scored in the top of the fifth, by way of a sacrifice line drive to left field by Lewis, scoring Catalano. Ennabe collected three consecutive strikeouts in the bottom of the fifth and was able to finish the game holding the home team scoreless.
Adelphi will return to action tomorrow on Janet L. Ficke Field at 3:00 p.m. as they complete the divisional series against Pace University.
