Baseball Scores Late In 4-1 Win At Southern Connecticut State

New Haven, CT – Four runs in the final two innings allowed the Adelphi University baseball team to walk away with a 4-1 victory at Northeast-10 Conference Divisional rival Southern Connecticut State earlier today.

Nick Zito and John Fogarty each picked up two hits for the Panthers (16-17/10-9 NE-10/8-7 NE-10 SW). Donato Signore drove in two runs while Jonathon Mulford went 8.0 innings on the mound with three strikeouts and just three hits allowed for his sixth win on the year.

The Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Nick Baviello that scored Greg Zullo. Zullo led off the inning with a double down the right field line and advanced to third two batters later on a bunt single from Jake Lieberman.

The next four innings went scoreless before the Panthers broke through to take the lead in the eighth. After back-to-back one out singles from Fogarty and Alex Zykoff, Signore drove a single to centerfield to plate Fogarty and John Cuttitta, who was on to pinch run for Zykoff, giving the Brown and Gold a 2-1 lead.

With two outs in the ninth, Adelphi added two more runs to its lead as Michael Stack reached on an outfield error to score Eric Hassell and Kory Cassara. Cassara also reached on an error before Hassell singled in the next at-bat to set up the scoring opportunity.

Mike Cranston came on in the ninth and worked around a two-out double to pick up his seventh save of the season and give Adelphi the 4-1 decision. In the process, Mulford remains unbeaten on the year at 6-0.

The Panthers start a stretch of four straight home games tomorrow with a 3:30 pm non-conference contest against Caldwell followed by a three-game divisional series against Saint Rose on Friday and Saturday.
