American International Sweeps Series From Baseball

The Yellow Jackets took both ends of today's NE-10 divisional doubleheader.

Springfield, MA – American International finished off a series sweep of the Adelphi University baseball team today by claiming both ends of a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader, 6-2 and 6-0.

Nick Zito led the Adelphi (15-17/9-9 NE-10) offense with four hits on the day while Robert Vani added three hits. Ray Triano also accumulated three hits, all in the first game.

The Panthers started the first game up 1-0 with a Vani sacrifice fly in the third inning that scored Vincent Sharkey. Sharkey initially drew a one out walk and moved to third on a single from Zito. The Yellow Jackets were quick with a scoring response in the next half inning with three singles that eventually scored Eddie Ritch.

Five runs in the fifth and sixth inning helped American International create a margin for victory. Aidan Farrell drove in one for the lone tally of the fifth followed by four runs in the sixth that came on just two hits. The big blow was a two-run homerun from Lucas Vallas after a leadoff walk.

Sharkey laid down a bunt in the seventh inning that plated Triano to cut the deficit to 6-2. However, David Kerlejza capped off the complete game performance on the mound for the Yellow Jackets with seven strikeouts over nine frames.

In game two, American International jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning with the first run coming on a steal of home from C.J. Boykin. Chris Starcun drove in the next run on a double before scoring two batters later on a groundout.

Eugene Quirk accounted for both RBIs in the fifth inning with a single that scored Vallas and Alex LaFayette. In the seventh, Starcun helped match the six-run output in the opener again in the night cap with his second RBI of the day a sacrifice fly.

Zito put the Brown and Gold on the board in the top of the ninth inning two out homerun to right field. However, another American International starting pitcher went the distance with Harrison Paige throwing all nine innings with six strikeouts and just four hits allowed.

The Panther are back on the road this Tuesday for a divisional matchup at Southern Connecticut State, scheduled for a 3:30 pm start
