Softball Sweeps AIC on Senior Day, 5-4 and 11-5

Garden City, NY – After honoring the seniors prior to the first game, the Adelphi University softball team went on to earn the series with a 5-4 win, followed by an 11-5 non-conference victory over American International College, Saturday afternoon. The Panthers clinch the No. 1 seed in the Southwest Division and have earned the regular season champion title. The team improves to 24-18 overall and 13-5 in league play while the visiting Yellow Jackets fall to 8-25 on the season.

Brenna Martini had a 5-for-7 day at the plate which included three doubles, one triple and four RBIs. Right behind her were Nicole Camera and Krista King who each registered four hits in the sweep, combining for six runs and five RBIs. Jordan Catalano went 2-for-4 in game one scoring one run, with teammate Victoria Wink picked up two RBIs in the one-run victory.

Game One
Adelphi jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Martini doubled to centerfield, scoring Catalano who reached by way of a single up the middle. AIC took advantage of Panther errors to score one in the bottom of the second.  Lewis started a rally in second, leading off with a double to centerfield. Camera followed that with a triple to take the lead.

King and O'Reilly were able to score by way of a Wink double down the left field line, to be ahead of the Yellow Jackets, 5-1. The Panthers were held scoreless for the remainder of the game, but American International managed to come within one, scoring in the top of the third, sixth and seventh, for a 5-4 final. Lindsay Mapes threw six innings allowing seven hits for three runs, with Jasmine Ennabe appearing on the mound for the final inning, earning the save.

Game Two
With momentum in their favor, the Panthers quickly matched the two runs scored by the Yellow Jackets in the top of the first in the bottom half of the inning.  Binstock and Lewis reached on AIC miscues, and took the lead on an RBI single by Camera up the middle. In her second at-bat of the inning, King found the left center gap to pick up a double and two RBIs and the Panthers extended the lead to six on a two-RBI single down the left field line by Catalano, making the score 8-2.

AIC threatened in the top of the third inning as Jamie Mainez and Jorrdin Miller were in scoring position and brought around by a two-run double courtesy of Lyndsey Letorneau to cut the Adelphi lead to four. Unsatisfied, the Panthers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth with contributions by Camera and Mary O'Reilly. Finishing off the sixth, Adelphi produced one more run as Wink scored on a double by Martini to match the run AIC scored in the top half.
