Softball Clinches Southwest Division Regular Season Crown, Splits with AIC

Garden City, NY – The Adelphi University softball team played to a split Friday afternoon against American International College, but secured the Northeast-10 Southwest Division Regular Season Champion title.  After earning a come-from-behind 4-3 win in game one, the Panthers dropped game two 1-0. The hosts improve to 22-18 overall and 12-5 in conference play as the Yellow Jackets drop to 8-23 on the season and 6-12 in league play.

Jordan Catalano went 2-for-4 at the plate in game one, driving in two runs and scoring once in the win. Brenna Martini also registered a multi-hit game, picking up one RBI along the way. Game two featured two hits from Nicole Camera, despite the loss.  Lindsay Mapes picked up her thirteenth win of the season, allowing two hits for three runs and striking out seven in 7.0 complete innings.

Game One
After loading the bases in the top of the first inning, AIC's Jorrdin Miller singled to left field to take a 1-0 lead.  Two more runs scored by way of a Panther miscue and walk to give the Yellow Jackets a three run advantage. Adelphi threatened in the second as Martini singled and Megan Lewis drew a walk, but the Brown and Gold were unable to gain any momentum.

Mapes retired the side in the top of the third inning courtesy of two line drives and one popup that was grabbed in foul territory.  Wink blasted a shot to left to score Catalano from first in the latter half of the inning, to be later brought around by a Martini double to get on the board, 3-2.

Three-up, three-down in the fourth for the Adelphi defense led to the next inning and a half remaining scoreless for both teams. Adelphi took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by Catalano after Camera started the inning with a base hit, followed by a Yellow jacket miscue that got runners into scoring position.  The Yellow Jackets tried to start a rally in the top of the seventh, but were retired in order by Mapes.

Game Two
Neither team created any noise until the top of the third inning when AIC scored their lone and eventual game winning run. Jamie Mainez singled up the middle to score Marlee Haigh who reached on a walk.

Krista King stole second and third in the fourth with one out but was left stranded as Jillian Bedard shut down the inning.  The following innings played out with a few stray hits, but no runs were generated from either team. Adelphi had two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but Bedard retired the final out.

Adelphi and AIC will return to action Saturday, April 25 in doubleheader action to complete the series. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. as the team will honor its seniors prior to game one.
