Garden City, N.Y. - The fifth ranked Adelphi University men's lacrosse team scored 13 straight goals, during a span that started in the second quarter and ended in the fourth, building a 19-4 lead in what turned out to be a 24-5 victory over #7 NYIT on Wednesday, April 22 on Motamed Field. With the win Adelphi improves to 11-2 overall, while the Bears fall to 10-3.
Salvatore Tuttle and
Nick Susko led the Panther offense with six points each, Tuttle on four goals and two assists, while Susko scored three time and picked up three helpers.
Tim Daly managed four points on two goals and two assists, while
Joseph Sciara (3G), and
Jamie McAndrew (2G, 1A) picked up three points in the win.
James McCann and
Ralph Faiella led the defensive effort, causing three and two tunrovers respectively, while
DJ Mauro picked up his third win of the season, making 10 stops.
John English was efficent at the face-off circle, winning 21 of 30 attempts and grabbing four ground balls.
The Panthers opened the scoring 2:55 in to the contest, when Susko scored off of a Tuttle feed, but the visitors responded with two straight, taking a 2-1 advantage with 4:10 remaining in the first. Chris Racalbuto answered back 39 seconds later, finding the back of the net off a Susko feed, sparking a three goal run that put the Brown and Gold on top, 4-2 with just 1:48 left in the first stanza.
NYIT seemed to inch closer, scoring with just 22 ticks left in the first, but
Luke Spitzer found an open Tuttle, who rippled the net with less then one second left, sending the Panthers into the second quarter with a two goal lead, 5-3. Daly opened the scoring in the second 15 minutes, but Luke Miller pulled the Bears back within two, 6-4, with 10:08 left in the half.
That's when things changed,
Cory Stavis scored an unassisted goal with 9:32 on the clock and kicked off what became a run of 13 straight goals that ended in the fourth quarter, with the final tally coming off the stick of Tuttle. At the conclusion of the run, the Panthers found themselves on top, 19-4 with just 10:45 left in the contest. NYIT stopped the run just over a minute later, but Adelphi tacked on five more goals, collecting a 24-5 victory.
The Brown and Gold return to action on Saturday, April 25 when they travel to Keene, New Hampshire, to close out the regular season against Franklin Pierce.
