Baseball Completes 3-0 NE-10 Win Against Pace Despite Hour Rain Delay

A rain delay halted play for an hour in the middle of the fourth inning of today's contest.

Garden City, NY – The Adelphi University baseball team played through a rain delay today to pick up a much needed Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division victory against Pace this afternoon, 3-0, at William J. Bonomo Field.

The Panthers (14-14/9-6 NE-10) racked up 10 hits throughout the game including two each from Nick Zito, Kory Cassara, Eric Hassell, and Michael Stack. Meanwhile, Jonathon Mulford moved to 5-0 on the season with five strikeouts throughout 5.0 scoreless innings of work. Nikolas Batas added 3.0 shutout innings with three strikeouts before Mike Cranston picked up his sixth save of the season.

Frank Mayo, Nick LoBello, and Cory Capaldi each recorded a hit for the Setters (16-15/9-7 NE-10) while Dylan Mouzakes came on in relief to pitch the final 5.0 innings with four strikeouts and no runs given up.

The Brown and Gold scored all three of the needed runs for Mulford in the top of the third inning. Rich Cambria reached on a one out error followed by a walk from Vincent Sharkey. With two aboard, Donato Signore doubled to the center field fence to drive in both runners. After advancing to second on a groundout, Signore scored with two outs on an infield single from Zito.

That was all the run support needed for the Adelphi pitching staff as Mulford did not allow a hit in the third as well as in the fourth and fifth innings after an hour long rain delay. Batas took over in the sixth, picking up three strikeouts before handing the ball off to Cranston in the ninth.

After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, Cranston generated a double play from Sharkey to Stack to Robert Vani before getting a fly out to secure the win.

Looking ahead, the Panthers return to action tomorrow with a 3:30 pm non-conference contest against Dominican on Bonomo Field.
