Softball Soars Past the Owls in Doubleheader Sweep, 6-0 and 6-3

Garden City, N.Y. – Heading into the final week of regular season play, the Adelphi University softball team hosted Southern Connecticut State in Northeast-10 Southwest division action Tuesday afternoon. Adelphi closed out the series with a 6-0 win in game one and earned a 6-3 victory in game two.

Victoria Wink led the way for Adelphi (21-17, 11-4 NE-10) across the two games, picking up six RBIs behind a 3-5 day at the plate. Jaclyn Binstock went a perfect 3-3 with two RBIs in game one, while Brenna Martini and Jordan Catalano accounted for Adelphi's other three runs on the day. In addition, Wink scored three runs in total, while Krista King crossed the plate twice in game two. Nicole Buch drove in two runs for the Owls (14-16, 8-9 NE-10) in game two.

Game One
After Lindsay Mapes retired the Owls in order, Wink began a two-out rally drawing a walk after being down 0-2 in the count. Martini was thrown four straight balls to occupy first, advancing Wink to second. Binstock went with an outside pitch for a single to the right side allowing Wink to scamper home and give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Cockrill hit both Nicole Camera and Mary O'Reilly to start the bottom of the second with no outs. A two-run single up the middle with two outs for Wink scored King and Camera to take a 3-0 lead.  Continuing with two outs, Martini blasted a shot to left center to score two runs and took advantage of an Owl miscue to advance to third. Binstock singled up the middle to score Martini and take a 6-0 Panther lead.

Southern Connecticut threatened with a bunt single in the top of the third inning, with two outs but was unable to capitalize as Mapes retired the final batter swinging.  The remainder of the innings went by scoreless as Mapes picked up her 12th win and seventh shutout of the season.

Game Two
In each of the first three innings, Jasmine Ennabe stranded an Owls runner in scoring position before the Panthers broke through in the bottom of the third frame. Christina Palmenteri led off the inning with a double before advancing to third on a groundout by King. Wink's deep fly to left was more than enough to score Palmenteri from third, giving the Brown and Gold another 1-0 lead.

After Mitchell doubles and Conklin was hit by a pitch in the top of the fifth, Koerner singled to load the bases against Ennabe with one out. A Buch sacrifice fly tied things up at 1-1, but Ennabe got D'Archangelo to ground out to second base to limit the damage.

In the bottom of the inning, however, Adelphi struck right back as Palmenteri and King reached base on singles, and Catalano reached on an error by the second baseman. From there, Wink doubled to send home two runners before she came around to score on a passed ball one batter later to give the Brown and Gold a 4-1 lead heading to the sixth. The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 6-1, behind RBIs from both Catalano and Wink.

An error by Martini at third with one out opened the door for an Owls' rally in the top of the seventh, and three consecutive two out hits plated a pair of Southern Connecticut runs to close the gap to 6-3 and bring the tying run to the plate. However, Ennabe retired Feerick on a fielder's choice to end the game and send the Panthers home with the sweep.

The Brown and Gold return to action for their final regular season series of the year, hosting the Yellow Jackets of American International College this weekend. The first game is scheduled for 3 pm on Friday, April 24.
