Caldwell, NJ – After opening the twinbill with a 2-0 victory, the Adelphi University softball program fell to the No. 21 Cougars of Caldwell University, 9-3 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon. The regional opponents post a 22-11-1 overall record with the split.
Adelphi (19-17) was led by junior
Jordan Catalano in the doubleheader, who batted 3-for-6 at the plate with one run scored while teammate
Victoria Wink registered three RBIs courtesy of a home run in game two.
Nicole Camera was responsible for one run in the first game, thanks to her third career home run.
Game OneIn true Adelphi fashion, the Panthers wasted no time as they scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Three consecutive singles from
Krista King, Catalano and Wink loaded the bases, followed by a sacrifice fly from
Jaclyn Binstock, allowing King to come home. An error committed by the visitors allowed two runners to reach after the leadoff was hit by a pitch, but were unable to capitalize.
The top of the second featured a solo home run for Camera to allow the Panthers to take a 2-0 lead. From then on out the game turned to a pitcher's duel as
Lindsay Mapes (11-7) allowed just four hits and struck out seven to earn the win. Caldwell put runners in scoring position in four innings but was unable to capitalize. In the sixth the Cougars had runner at third with one out, but Mapes recorded a groundout and a fly ball to end the threat.
Game TwoSwinging momentum in their favor, Caldwell tacked four runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning after Catalano was the only one to reach in the top half. Kristen Knorr got herself in scoring position with a stolen base to be later advanced byBrielle Reighn and brought in by a Marisa Monasseri single through the left side. Kortney Craker stepped up and blasted her fifth home run of the season to take the 4-0 lead.
After Monasseri singled home Reighn in the bottom of the fifth, Wink hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to make it a two-run game, 5-3. But Caldwell hit seven consecutive singles in the bottom of the sixth to score four runs and take a commanding 9-3 lead. Sophomore pitcher Sydney Ponto held Adelphi to three runs on six hits while fanning seven and walking three over seven innings.
