Wink's Walk-off Powers Softball to Split with Wilmington

Senior's walk-off in extras secures second-game win for Adelphi.

Garden City, N.Y. - After losing a 10-0 opener to the Wildcats of Wilmington University on Thursday afternoon, the Adelphi University softball team claimed a come-from-behind 2-1 victory in eight innings courtesy of senior Victoria Wink's walk-off RBI single to pocket a split of the non-conference double-header on Ficke Field.

The two RBIs for the Panthers (18-16) for the Panthers in game two came off the bats of Wink and Christina Palmenteri, while the latter also scored the game-winning run. Jasmine Ennabe got the victory for Adelphi in game two, going all eight innings and scattering one run on four hits while striking out six. Kelsey Doherty had three RBIs on the day for Wilmington (23-12), while three other players drove in two in game one.

Game One

While Adelphi threatened as early as the bottom of the first inning, they were unable to push a run across. Consecutive singles by Jordan Catalano, Wink and Brenna Martini loaded the bases with one out in the Panthers' first inning of the game, but Jaclyn Binstock fouled out and Megan Lewis struck out against Chelsea Botsch to end the threat. On the other side, the visiting Wildcats tagged Lindsay Mapes for five runs on six hits over the first four innings to open up an insurmountable lead, scoring their first run in the third before tacking on four more on four hits in the fourth.

With Adelphi able to muster up just two more hits after the first inning, the Wildcats doubled their lead in the top of the fifth as they pushed across five runs against Nicole Camera. The Wildcats ran off five hits and two advantage of two Brown and Gold errors to open up a 10-0 lead and ensure that the game ended in the bottom of the fram when Botsch retired the Panthers in order.

Game Two

After Doherty homered to lead off the game against Ennabe and put the Panthers in an early hole, the freshman hurler settled in and allowed just three hits for the rest of the game. The Panthers had few oppotunities in the early going as they looked to tie, with their best early chance coming in the second. Martini led off with a double and stood at third with one out, but the offense was unable to drive her in.

To her credit, Ennabe worked out of trouble in both the third and fifth innings to keep the Wildcat lead at just one. She worked around two hits in the third, benefiting from a runner caught stealing and a runner who left early to ensure two outs on the bases. In the fifth, Wilmington had runners at second and third with one out, but Ennabe recorded a strikeout of Becca Stanley before Keara McCarthy flew out to end the threat.

Camera singled with one out before stealing second to give Adelphi a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the inning. Although Mary O'Reilly struck out on the Panthers' first chance to tie, Palmenteri would not be denied and drove a double down the left field line to score Camera and tie the game. The contest remained that way until the bottom of the eighth, when Palmenteri again found herself in the middle of things after a leadoff walk. Krista King sacrificed her to second, before she advanced another base on a Catalano groundout to set the stage for Wink. The senior duly delivered, and lined a single up the middle to send the Panthers home with a 2-1 victory.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, April 19 when they travel to Caldwell College to take on the Cougars in a non-conference double-header at 12 pm.
