New Haven, Conn. - Behind strong efforts in the circle from
Lindsay Mapes and
Jasmine Ennabe, the Adelphi University softball team swept a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader in shutout fashion, 3-0 and 9-0, over the host Owls of Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Panthers (17-15, 10-4 NE-10) were led on offense on the day by
Krista King, who drove in three runs across two games, and
Nicole Camera, who picked up her four RBIs in game two behind a 3-3 performance at the plate.
Jordan Catalano went 2-4 in game two with an RBI, while
Jaclyn Binstock and
Melaney Reichelt each scored three runs on the afternoon. Mapes and Ennabe limited the Owls (11-14, 4-7 NE-10) to just three hits in each game.
Game One Mapes earned her tenth win this season with a 3-0 final in game one. The Panthers went down in order in the top of the first and Mapes picked up the first two of her nine strikeouts in the bottom half. Martini singled to centerfield to lead off the second but was unable to advance as Cockrill retired the next three batters in order. Southern Connecticut experienced much of the same, stranding one on base.
The Brown and Gold lit up their side of the scoreboard in the top of the third inning as a single to start the inning followed by four consecutive walks allowed pinch runner Reichelt to stroll home. Mapes again retired the side in the bottom of the third and fourth to allow her offense to get to work once more. Palmenteri doubled but was not left on base for long as King reached on an Owl error, allowing her to cross home plate and give Adelphi a 2-0 lead.
The third and final run for the visitors came by way of a King single, which allowed Reichelt to hustle in after reaching first and stealing second. The Owls left just four runners on base with Mapes allowing just three hits and one walk Wednesday afternoon for her sixth shutout.
Game TwoThe Panthers picked up a big five-inning victory in game two behind nine runs scored, as they benfited five Owl errors. After the two teams traded zeros in the first inning, the Panthers scratched across their first run in the top of the second. After Binstock reached courtesy of an error by the center fielder, a groundout by
Megan Lewis put her on third. A Camera single to left drove in Binstock and gave the visitors the 1-0 lead. While that was all Ennabe would need on the afternoon, the Panthers tacked on another four runs in the top of the third behind extra base hits from Martini and Camera.
In the next inning, the Panthers continued to take advantage of Owl miscues as Plamenteri led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and found herself crossing home plate on a wild pitch just two batters later to make the score 6-0. The Brown and Gold closed out their day on offense in the fifth, adding on three runs in total. After Martini and Binstock both reached base on errors to open the inning, Reichelt was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Camera singled in Martini before Mary O'Rielly drove in Binstock on a sac fly to center to make the score 8-0. After King walked three batters later to again load the bases, a
Jordan Catalano single to shortstop plated Reichelt for the ninth and final Adelphi run.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, April 16, when they host the Wildcats of Wilmington University in a 2:30 pm doubleheader.
