Baseball Holds Off Kutztown For 3-2 Victory

The Panthers held off a late rally from the Bears to pick up the non-conference win.

Garden City, NY - The Adelphi University Baseball was able to take advantage of fielding miscues from Kutztown in a 3-2 non-conference victory earlier today at William J. Bonomo Field.

Donato Signore tallied two of the Panthers' (12-13) three hits on the day with John Fogarty picking up the other on a triple. Fogarty also added an RBI along with Alex Zykoff. Kyle Garrison earned the victory with 2.0 scorless inning with one strikeout and no hits allowed. Nikolas Batas forced three groundouts in the ninth to notch his first save of the year.

Despite the decision, Kutztown (15-14) out hit Adelphi 8-3 lead by three from designated hitter Ryan Cox. Cox drove in one of the two Bears' runs as well while Drew DeShong was credited with the other. Matt Matricardi and Peter Masterson combined for 3.2 innings of shutout relief work for Kutztown, with Matricardi striking out three in the process.

Signore crossed home to score the first run for the Brown and Gold in the second on a ground out from Zkyoff after leading the inning off with a double to center field. With the bases loaded in the fourth, Fogarty picked up his RBI on a fielder's choice as Nick Zito scored from third as the senior started the inning with five-pitch walk. Kory Cassara pushed the lead to 3-0 for the Panthers in the next inning, scoring all the way from first after walking with one out. While at first, Cassara advanced to second on a wild pitch and then moved all the way home on two fielding errors from Kutztown as the Bears totaled four on the day.

However, the Bears looked for a rally in the eighth by scoring two runs. Four singles in the inning, including RBI knocks for Cox and DeShong helped cut into the deficit. Ricky Van Allen limited the damage to just two runs by forcing a fly out to end the threat.

In the ninth, Bastas needed just seven pitches by getting a ground out to second base and first base as well as himself to put away the win for the Panthers.

Adelphi is next in action this Sunday with a 12:00 pm doubleheader against Felician to be played at MCU Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones - the New York Mets Single A affiliate of the New York Penn League.
