Softball Sweeps Pace in Southwest Division Doubleheader

Megan Lewis and Brenna Martini each registered homeruns in today's sweep.

Briarcliff, NY – The Adelphi University softball team improved to 8-12 Wednesday afternoon with a Northeast-10 Conference, Southwest Division sweep at Pace University. With a 3-0 shutout in game one and a 5-3 come-from-behind win in game two, the Panthers are 5-1 in league play, as Pace falls to 11-6 and 3-3 in the conference.

Offensively, Brenna Martini led the Panthers at the plate, going 4-for-6 including one homerun, four RBIs and one run scored. Megan Lewis and Krista King both hit above .500 as well, going 3-for-5 and 4-for-8, respectively, combining for three runs.

Game 1
With a 9-4 hit advantage in favor of the Panthers, Adelphi earned their first victory of the afternoon, 3-0. Krista King led off the game with a quick single to the shortstop and later advanced, for her sixth stolen base of the season. Wasting no time, Jordan Catalano singled to right-center moving King to third. With a groundout from Martini, King crossed home to give the Brown and Gold a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

The remainder of visitor runs came by way of a Lewis two-run homerun in the top of the fourth, scoring Jaclyn Binstock who reached on a single to left field. The home team threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Natalie Gellos was left stranded at third base.  Lindsay Mapes threw all seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out five to improve to 5-5, and throwing her third shutout in the past six games for Adelphi.

Game 2
Much like the first game, Adelphi was able to put up a run in the top of the first inning, this time courtesy of a Jordan Catalano double, who was later brought in on a Martini single. Pace made some noise in the bottom of the second and third, taking a 2-1 lead over the Panthers. Jasmine Ennabe held the Setters scoreless in the fourth,

With one out, Christina Palmenteri reached on a bunt single to be later advanced all the way to third by a King double to centerfield. With a 3-0 green light, Victoria Wink drove in two runs on ground rule double that bounced over the left centerfield fence. In the next at-bat, Martini blasted her fourth homerun this season to take a 5-2 lead over the hosts.

Mapes returned to the circle for the Brown and Gold in the bottom of the fifth and worked tirelessly with the Adelphi defense to hold the home team scoreless through the next two innings. Pace started the seventh with back-to-back singles and had the bases loaded with just one out. An Ashley Lew single to the pitcher, drove in Jeane Drury to leave the Setters trailing by two, but were unable to capitalize as Mapes struck out the final batter to earn the save.

The team will return to action this weekend as they host Le Moyne College on Thursday and Friday in doubleheader contests slated to start at 2 p.m. For any schedule updates or changes visit www.aupanthers.com or follow Adelphi Athletics on Twitter.
