Softball Plays to Southwest Division Split with Le Moyne

Garden City, NY – A seventh inning push was not enough for the Adelphi University softball team who dropped the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against Le Moyne College, but earned a 6-1 victory in game one. The split improves the Dolphins to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in league play as Adelphi falls to 9-13, 6-2 in the Northeast-10.

Nicole Camera went 3-for-5 today at the plate, scoring three runs with one RBI; Brenna Martini also went 3-for-5 with one RBI over both games. In game one, Krista King and Jordan Catalano each went 2-for-4 , combining for three runs and 2 RBIs.

Game 1
The Panthers jumped onto the board in the bottom of the first inning, after Lindsay Mapes and the defense retired the first three Dolphins in order. Krista King led off with an infield single to be later advanced to third on a Jordan Catalano double down the left field line. A fielder's choice scored King to give Adelphi a 1-0 lead. Catalano was able to cross home courtesy of a Martini double to left field, but the inning ended after a base-running miscue.  Le Moyne did not score until the top of the third inning as Cara Cawley led off with a single up the middle to be later brought in by Courtney Case, to trail 2-1.

Christina Palmenteri picked up an RBI in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, to take a 3-1 lead over the Dolphins. Mapes struck out two in next inning to keep the visitors from scoring, stranding two Le Moyne batters on the base paths. Adelphi opened up the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, picking up three hits for three runs and a 6-1 lead. Nicole Camera reached on an infield single and advanced when a Le Moyne error allowed pinch hitter Melaney Reichelt to arrive safely at first base with one out. King drilled a ball to center and scampered into second on a throw that arrived too late at home, allowing Camera to score. Catalano skipped a ball past right fielder Kirsten Trotta to result in a standup triple, scoring Reichelt and King to increase the lead to five, 6-1.

With two runners left on base in the top of the seventh, Mapes retired two batters by way of a strikeout and ground out to earn her sixth win of the season. In seven complete innings, she gave up six hits for one earned one and struck out seven Dolphins along the way.

Game 2
The tables turned in the second game, with Le Moyne scoring first, in the top of the third inning. Alexis Eastman doubled to left center, scoring Kirsten Trotta. Back-to-back doubles in the top of the fifth inning forced the Panthers to fall behind 3-0 to Le Moyne.  Reichelt's sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the fifth placed Camera and Megan Lewis in scoring position for Adelphi. Palmenteri registered her second RBI of the day, to get on the board and trail by two, 3-1.

The teams held that score til the final inning when hosts attempted to start a rally. To lead off the inning, Nicole Camera knocked her second career home run to right field, to bring the Panthers within one with no outs. Unfortunately Toni Secreti closed out the game for Le Moyne with two flyouts and one ground out to earn the save.

Both teams will return to action on Friday, April 3 for a doubleheader slated to start at 2:00 p.m. In the event that inclement weather affects the field, the Panthers are prepared to host Le Moyne on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. for two games.
