Eighth Inning Rally Lifts Baseball Past Southern Connecticut State, 4-3

Tyler Murphy drove in the game-tying and winnings runs with a pinch-hit double.

Garden City, NY – A rally in the seventh and eighth innings helped the Adelphi University baseball team comeback from a 3-0 deficit to upend Southern Connecticut State 4-3 during this afternoon's Northeast-10 Conference game at William J. Bonomo Field.

Tyler Murphy drove in the two winning runs with pinch-hit double to right center during the eighth inning, driving in Ray Triano and Kory Cassara. Eric Hassell led off the inning with a single as the Panthers trailed 3-1. The sophomore scored two batters later as Triano reached on an error trying to bunt Hassell and Cassara over. Murphy followed with the big blow to help the Panthers (5-9/3-3 NE-10) pick up the league win.

Southern Connecticut (9-11/1-3 NE-10) scored one run each in the first, fourth, and fifth to claim a 3-0 advantage halfway through the game. Matt Burns led off the first and fifth innings by getting on-base to score the first and third runs of the game for the Owls.

The Brown and Gold manufactured their first run in the seventh inning on a RBI triple by Robert Vani. Vani drove in Vincent Sharkey on a 3-1 count after Sharkey led off the inning with a walk. The team continued the momentum into the eighth where Murphy took advantage of the pinch hit opportunity, his first pinch hit as a Panther.

Vani led the Panthers with three hits on the day while Cassara added two. Ricky Van Allen earned the victory with 1.1 innings pitched in relief followed by Mike Cranston earning his second save of the year by pitching a shutout ninth.

Adelphi returns to Bonomo Field this weekend for a three-game series against Le Moyne starting Friday at 3:30 pm followed by a 12:00 pm doubleheader on Saturday. For schedule changes and updates, stay tuned to AUPanthers.com and follow us on Twitter (@AUPanthers).
