Baseball Defeats Le Moyne 8-4; Scala Wins 300th

Head Coach Dom Scala won his 300th game at the helm of the Panthers in today's 8-4 win.

Garden City, NY - Playing through the rain in the first several innings, the Adelphi University baseball managed to upend Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne 8-4 in the first of a three-game weekend series. In the process, Head Coach Dom Scala picked up his 300th career victory.

Robert Vani and Nick Zito each went 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored for the Panthers (6-9/4-3 NE-10) while Vani drove in two runs, including a homerun. Eric Hassell also scored two runs with one hit and a RBI. Mike Cranston picked up his third save of the season with 1.1 innings pitched and two strikeouts. Nikolas Batas moved to 2-1 on the year with 2.0 innings of relief, coming on in the fifth inning.

Brian Cox went 5-for-5 from his leadoff spot in the lineup for the Dolphins (7-10/1-1 NE-10) to score one run. Tyler Schmitt scored two runs on a 2-for-5 day while four different Le Moyne individuals were responsible for a RBI.

The Brown and Gold tacked on two runs in the top of the second inning, playing as the away team at Bonomo Field today, as a Hassell groundout produced a Zito run followed by John Fogarty driving in Donato Signore with a single up the middle. Le Moyne pushed on across in third as Schmitt scored on a fielder's choice before the Panthers added two more runs in the fourth. Zito again scored, this time on a wild pitch, while Hassell touched home on a bases loaded walk to Vincent Sharkey.

The Dolphins again cut the lead in half in the following inning at 4-2 as Dylan Swetman singled up the middle. However, Adelphi again put two on the scoreboard in the seventh inning. Sharkey led off the inning with a double and scored two batters later after a Michael Stack sacrifice bunt and a Vani single. Vani came around to score with two outs on a fielding error during Kory Cassara's at-bat.

Le Moyne responded in the seventh and eighth with one run each as Cox scored his run in the seventh while Schmitt scored in the eighth. In between those two scores for the Dolphins, Hassell tripled to leadoff the eighth and scored two batters later on a passed ball. Vani capped off the scoring for the day with a homerun to deep center field, giving the Panthers the final 8-4 advantage. After Cranston came on in the eighth to get one out, the senior picked up the save with two strikeouts and a ground out to work around a two-out single from Swetman.

Coach Scala picks up his 300th career victory in his 12th season with the Brown and Gold. The Panthers made the postseason, between the NE-10 and East Coast Conference, for the 10th time in his tenure last season that included a 2011 NE-10 Championship and ECC Title in 2007 and 2009 as well as four NCAA Tournament bids. He also earned NE-10 Coach of the Year honors in 2011 following earning the award in 2005 with the ECC.

The two divisional foes return to Bonomo Field for a 12:00 pm doubleheader on Saturday.
