Softball Concludes Saint Rose Series, Draws Sunday Split

Saint Rose acted as the home team, as this series was originally scheduled to be played in Albany, NY.

Garden City, NY- With the sun shining in a brisk Garden City, New York, the Adelphi softball team finished their three-game series with the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights Sunday afternoon. After dropping the first game 7-3, the Panthers turned it around to earn a 3-1 victory in game two. The loss stops the streak, but the split improves Adelphi to 6-12 overall and 3-1 in the Southwest Division. Saint Rose falls to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the division.

Much like yesterday, the Panthers played as the visiting squad on their home field for both contests. Victoria Wink had 4-for-6 day at the plate, in which all four hits were doubles, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Brenna Martini registered two doubles and two RBIs and also scored once and Nicole Camera registered her first collegiate home run in the fifth inning of game two.

Game 1
The Panthers threatened to score in the first three innings against the Golden Knights, as runners were stranded on the basepaths. The acting home team was the first ot get on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as they batted through the lineup once, scoring seven runs. By way of three consecutive singles to lead off the inning, Zoe Dubois picked up her first RBI of the game, scoring Carly Wood. Three more singles and two walks drawn by Saint Rose left them with a solid 7-0 cushion as they headed back out to the field.

In the top of the fifth, Krista King created Adelphi's first run when she reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a groundout, to be later driven in on a Wink double to left field. Martini picked up an RBI when her double down the left field line scored Wink. Trailing by five, the Adelphi defense held the Golden Knight offense scoreless for the remaining two innings, but were only able to tack on one more run in the top of the seventh as Martini and Jaclyn Binstock recorded back-to-back doubles. The game ended with a final 7-3 decision in favor of Saint Rose, as Renee Vaiano picked up her second win of the season.

Game 2
Saint Rose took advantage of several Panther miscues in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Going scoreless over the next two innings, Adelphi was able to tie the game in the top of the fifth on a solo shot by Camera over the right field fence; her first collegiate home run. Another run was added to the Panther column in the top of the sixth, with a leadoff double by Wink, who was later driven in by a Martini single to centerfield.

Lindsay Mapes held the Golden Knights to just one hit and no runs in the sixth to given her team the opportunity to score one more time. Christina Palmenteri led off the top of the seventh with a single up the middle, advancing to second on an infield single by King. Catalano reached on a fielder's choice, as Saint Rose grabbed the out at second, allowing Palmenteri to move to third and later scamper home on a sacrifice fly by Wink, to make the score 3-1.

After recording two flyouts to the first two batters and a groundout to end the inning, Mapes earned her fourth victory of the season, tossing a complete seven innings and allowing just one run on four hits.

The team will return to action on Wednesday, April first as they scheduled to travel to Pace University for a Northeast-10 Conference and Southwest Division doubleheader, slated to begin at 2 p.m.
