Garden City, NY – Following postponements and venue changes, New Haven claimed both games of a doubleheader against the Adelphi University baseball team today, 3-2 and 5-2, that included a walk off in the 12th inning of game one.
In the 12th inning of game one, Jack Zagaja played the role of hero for the Chargers (4-6/2-2 NE-10) by driving in Kyle Cullen with the game-winning run on a single. Cullen led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before being driven in.
The Panthers (4-9/2-3 NE-10) held a 2-0 lead early in the contest with two runs in the top of the second inning on the back of a two-RBI single from
Alex Zykoff. The hit scored
Robert Vani and
Donato Signore, who led off the inning with a double and single, respectively.
New Haven chipped away into the deficit in the fourth with one run on a RBI double from Nick Russo followed by tying the game in the seventh. Russo doubled again, this time leading off the inning, and later scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly from Robert Petrillo. Both teams remained scored from the eighth through 11th innings before the Chargers walked off in the 12th.
Jonathon Mulford got the start in game for the Brown and Gold, throwing 6.0 innings with four strikeouts. His counterpart, Joey Royer started 7.0 innings for New Haven. Brian Caselli earned the victory by logging 5.0 innings out of the bullpen, striking out five and allowing two hits.
Vani led the Panther attack with three hits while the Chargers had three players notch three hits, including Cullen and Russo along with Tom Walraven.
The Chargers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings in game two, featuring a two-run home run from Zagaja followed by two separate RBI hits in the third. Signore singled in the top of the fourth to drive in
Nick Zito and cut the deficit to 4-1 before New Haven gained back the run in the bottom half on an unearned run from Russo.
Signore drove in his second run of the day on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, once again scoring Zito, and make the New Haven lead 5-2. However, the Charger bullpen pitched three shutout innings with TJ Margiotta picking up the save in the ninth.
Vani again added three hits in the effort while
Vincent Sharkey came in to go 2-for-2 off the bench. Four Chargers accumulated two hits each to make up eight of the team's nine.
The finale of the series is currently scheduled for a 3:30 pm first pitch in West Haven, CT tomorrow afternoon. Stay tuned to AUPanthers.com for any schedule changes.
