Softball Takes Fifth Straight, Shuts Out St. Rose 5-0

Panthers score three runs in the first en route to win.

Garden City, N.Y. - Under grey, overcast and flurrying skies, the Adelphi University softball team used three first-inning run, and three RBIs by Megan Lewis, to claim a 5-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Golden Knights from the College of Saint Rose on Ficke Field on Saturday afternoon.

The game, originally scheduled to be played in Albany, was moved to Garden City earlier this week; as a result, the Panthers played as the visiting squad on their home field and wasted no time in getting on the board. In the top of the first, Krista King created Adelphi's first run when she led off the game with a single to left, stole second and advanced to third on an error by the Golden Knights' shortstop, before being driven in on a single by Jordan Catalano.

A Victoria Wink double put runners at the corners with no one out, and after Nicole Wickham retired the next two Panthers, Megan Lewis drove in the pair on a single before being thrown out at second to end the inning with Adelphi leading 3-0.

Those first inning runs were all Lindsay Mapes needed, as the sophomore hurled a complete game, scattering six hits across seven innings while walking two and striking out seven. Against her, the Golden Knights threatened just twice in the first five innings. In the bottom of the second, the first two runners reached base before Mapes retired the next three batters on a flyout to center and two strikeouts to end the frame; in the fifth, the Golden Knights were unable to take advantage of a one out walk before making the final two outs on the base paths to end the inning.

The Panthers tacked on a run in the sixth courtesy of a leadoff double by pinch hitter Nicole Camera, and had runners at the corners with nobody out after a bunt single by Christina Palmenteri. Danielle Cutuli picked up the RBI when her single to center drove in Camera, but Adelphi's inning ended two batters later when Palmenteri was thrown out at home trying to score on a Catalano flyout.

In the seventh, Brenna Martini reached on a one out single, and pinch runner Melaney Reichelt scored the fifth and final Adelphi run on a Lewis double. After recording the first two outs and allowing singles to the next two hitters, Mapes retired Carly Wood on a flyout to center to close out the game.

The Brown and Gold return to action tommorow, March 29, when they finish out the three-game set with the Golden Knights with a doubleheader scheduled for 12 pm and 2:30 pm.
