Softball Scores Early to Win Game One Over New Haven, Game Two Halted

Due to unplayable weather conditions, the Panthers will resume game two against New Haven at a later date.

Garden City, NY - Scoring all their runs in the top of the first inning, the Adelphi University softball team picked up their fourth straight win of the season, defeating the University of New Haven 4-0. Game two was halted in the top of the first inning, due to rain. The Panthers improve to 4-11, earning their first Northeast-10 conference win and the Chargers fall to 3-7-1 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Megan Lewis drove in two runs in the bottom of the first, going 1-for-3 at the plate in game one. Jordan Catalano and Victoria Wink each registered one hit and one run scored as teammate Brenna Martini also drove in a run and scored. Krista King reached base twice by way of two walks, scoring once.

After Lindsay Mapes retired the first three batters in order, Adelphi wasted no time getting on the board. King drew a walk to steal just a pitch later. Catalano beat out an infield hit to third base and Wink ripped a single to right field to load the bases. The Chargers attempted to throw out Catalano but were unsuccessul as King scampered home for the first run of the game.

Lewis's single to right field scored Catalano and Wink to take a 3-0 lead over New Haven. Mary O'Reilly grounded out to the right side, but not before Martini was able to score, making it 4-0 after the first inning. The Adelphi defense held strong through the next two innings, retiring three batters in order in the second and third. The Chargers threatened with runners on base in the fourth and sixth, but were unable to produce runs.

Mapes finished 7.0 complete innings allowing just four hits and striking out three for her second win of the season. Game two has been halted due to policy and will be resumed at a later date.
