Garden City, N.Y.- Adelphi University midfielder
Connor Duddy's five goals led the Panthers past visiting Pace University, 13-10 on Tuesday, March 24 in a Northeast-10 Conference Contest. With the win Adelphi rises to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while Pace slips to 3-3 and 1-2 in Northeast-10 action.
Duddy led the way with five goals, while
Nick Susko chipped in four points on 1 goal and three assists.
Jamie McAndrew (2G, 1A) and
Jack Cutrone (1G, 2A) both posted three points, and
Salvatore Tuttle and
Tim Daly netted one goal and handed out one assist each.
Joe Giardina led the defense, causing seven turnovers and grabbed seven ground balls, while
John English picked up nine ground balls. English also controlled the face-off "X", winning 20 of 24 face-off attempts.
John McGrath and
DJ Mauro teamed up to make eight stops in the win.
The Panthers wasted no time on offense, with Duddy posting an early unassisted score just 59 seconds into the contest. McAndrew and Cutrone also added to the three goal first quarter for Adelphi.
Pace came firing back, as midfielder Wyatt Barfoot scored an unassisted goal with 3:56 left in the first quarter to put the Setters on the board. Barfoot quickly added a second goal, with 14:05 on the game clock in the second quarter, despite Adelphi winning the quarter starting faceoff. Pace finished the half with four goals on the score board.
However, Adelphi completed the first 30 minutes of play with a 9-4 advantage over the visiting Setters.
Nick Susko led the Panthers' aggressive charge with three assists and a goal of his own. After an Adelphi timeout that was taken with 11:52 on the game clock, McAndrew had his second goal of the contest on a pass from Cutrone. Chris Racalbuto was successful on one of his two first half shots and posted a goal assisted by Susko.
Tuttle put one in the back of the net to extend the Adelphi lead to four, before Duddy chipped in his second of three goals in the contest, to close the quarter and send the Panthers into the locker room ahead, 9-4.
Peter Sharp posted the first score of the second half, helping the Setters to cut the deficit to 9-5. Pace's defense held their own in the third, limiting the Panthers to one goal, which came off the stick of Duddy and made the score, 10-5 in Adelphi's favor heading into the fourth.
Daly recorded an early goal in the fourth to push the Adelphi advantage to six goals, 11-5, but the Setters continued to battle well into the fourth quarter scoring a total five goals on 11 shots. Pace scored with just under nine minutes to play which put the Setters within three goals of the Panthers, 11-8.
However, Duddy scored his fifth goal of the day, off an assist from Cutrone with 2:05 left in the contest, putting the Panthers back on top, 12-8. Adelphi and Pace would trade goals, making it a 13-9 game with 1:22 to play. The Setters kept attacking and notched a 10
th goal with just 1.8 seconds on the clock, leaving the Brown and Gold with a 13-10 victory.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, March 28 when they travel to Waltham, Massachusetts for a 4:00 pm meeting with Bentley University.
