Shirley, NY - The Adelphi University softball team hit the dirt for the first time since returning from California last month, as they traveled out east to play Dowling College Sunday afternoon. After being shutout in the first game 5-0, the Panthers came back full force in game two, for a final decision of 11-3. This is the squad's first victory for the 2015 campaign. Dowling posts a 4-4 overall record as Adelphi stands at 1-11.
Mary O'Reilly posted the highest percentage at the plate today, going 3-for-6 with one double and one RBI over both games. Game two featured four Panthers with multiple hits, as
Jordan Catalano went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Krista King chipped in two hits, two runs and two RBIs as teammate
Megan Lewis hit her first collegiate home run, for three RBIs.
Jasmine Ennabe completed a full seven innings, scattering just five hits, with just one earned run, striking out four Golden Lions for her first collegiate win.
Game OneThe hosts wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the first game, as Arianna La Puma homered to centerfield with two runners on, to jump out to a 3-0 lead with two outs. The following inning the Panthers threatened to match the score, but Lewis, O'Reilly and
Danielle Cutuli were left stranded as the Lions captured the final out.
Much like the top of the second, the fourth inning for Adelphi played out the same as they loaded the bases, but were unable to push any runs across. Dowling scored one run in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings for a 5-0 decision. Pitcher for the Golden Lions, Vanessa Juengerkes, pitched a full 7.0 innings, allowing just six hits and holding the Brown and Gold scoreless.
Game Two No runners crossed home plate for the first four innings in the second game, but Adelphi was the first to score on an O'Reilly single up the middle. The home team answered back in the second half as a throw down to second allowed Marie Racano to tie the score at 1-1. Dowling took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a hit and one Panther miscue.
Unsatisfied, Adelphi tacked on seven runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-2 lead. Back-to-back base hits from
Victoria Wink and
Brenna Martini started what became a scoring spree for the Panthers. Jackie Binstock picked up an RBI as she doubled to right field, scoring Wink. After a pitching change with no outs, Lewis blasted her first collegiate home run to left field, scoring three. Batting through the lineup and another pitching change for the Golden Lions allowed Adelphi to pick up three more runs before heading into the second half of the sixth.
Dowling scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough to cut the deficit as Adelphi had scored three more runs in the top of the inning on just one hit and several wild pitches from the Lion mound, for a final 11-3 victory.
