Fort Lauderdale, FL – In the third and final game of the series between Nova Southeastern and the Adelphi University baseball team, the host Sharks took rubber match by a final score of 19-2. In the night game, New Haven claimed an 8-2 victory in a non-conference tilt.
Ray Triano led the Panthers (1-3) with two hits and a run while
Robert Vani went 1-for-2 with a RBI and a walk in the opener. Four others added hits for the Brown and Gold.
Mario Urdaneta fell a homerun shy of the cycle for the Sharks (19-4) by going 4-for-4 with six RBI, four runs, and two walks. Alexander Fernandez went 2-for-4 with four RBI that included a homerun while also adding a stolen base. Ryan Castellanos picked up his sixth win of the year behind 7.0 innings of work that allowed just one earned run and striking out four.
After tying the game at 2-2 in the top of the third with a Vani RBI single after
Nick Zito doubled, Nova Southeastern scored the eventual game-winner in the next half inning with a RBI single from Michael Hernandez.
The Sharks then added six runs and five runs in the fourth and sixth innings respectively to create the large lead. The big blow in the fourth was a bases-clearing, three RBI triple from Urdaneta. In the sixth, Urdaneta added two more RBIs with a single to center followed by a Fernandez two-run homerun to left field.
Nova Southeastern continued the offensive output in the seventh with four more runs and another score in the eighth. Ryan Dodge led off the seventh with a pinch-hit homerun.
In the nightcap, the Chargers (1-3) put four runs on the board in two separate innings to earn the win. Robert Petrillo went 4-for-4 with two runs scored while Zach Collett notched three RBIs on two hits while scoring two runs.
For the Panthers,
Kory Cassara went 4-for-5 from the plate with
Vincent Sharkey keeping up his hot start to the year with two more hits, a run scored, and a walk.
Adelphi got the first run across in the third inning on a bases loaded walk to Vani on a 3-1 count. The Chargers quickly responded in the top of the fourth as Collett hit a two-run homerun after a leadoff single from Petrillo. Kyle Cullen followed up with a RBI triple and scored on a single to give New Haven a 4-1 lead.
Nick Zito helped the Brown and Gold cut into the lead at 4-2 during the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to score Sharkey. However, heading into the ninth with the two-run lead, the Chargers added four more insurance runs to help secure the victory. Tom Walraven got the scoring spurt started with a homerun to left field off the scoreboard followed by RBI triple from Collett and two RBI singles.
Kellen Croce pitched four scoreless innings to pick up the save that included three strikeouts. Vincent Aprea earned the win by pitching the first five innings.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow in Boca Raton, FL at Lynn to face Long Island rival Molloy at 11:00 am.
